Default Mac doesn't turn off properly

When I try to turn my Mac off, it closes all applications except Finder, which leaves blank desktop and Dock stay forever. So I have to turn it off with button. This problem began to appear since Mavericks.

I guess Pro Tools is involved in this issue, because Mac seems to turn off OK if I don't start Pro Tools or put it to sleep before shutting down.

I noticed this also on my 2015 mbp. I found logging off first then shutting down resolving this.

Guys I did this, removed core audio driver on Yosemite and El Capitan.
Problem solved.

One more graceful way of shutting down if you do get stuck like this is to fire up a Terminal window and "sudo shutdown -h now" - bit longwinded but kinder to drives etc!

Very true. I did this for a long time until I realised it could be cured by driver removal.

When a Mac does this a lot of times it's due to something not shutting down properly - it could be software and it could even be a drive that went to sleep or has not properly been unmounted. I've seen that happen here a couple of times.

Wow thank you, I'll try this when I get home today. Will Pro Tools ask to re-install the driver after I delete it? Or is this file just useless?

So, I was one of those guys who stayed on Snow Leopard for years after it no longer supported, but not long ago, I figured I’d jump up a few OS and get Yosemite. This was a massive mistake, not only is my pt 11 entirely unstable, totally glitching up, throwing “increase buffer setting” errors left and right on even simple small sessions (where before I could run massive sessions), but I’m also experiencing this issue, however I don’t own PT HD, so are there any fixes to this issue for native users?

I recently went back to OSX 10.10.5 having tried it a couple of years ago and found it wasn't stable enough for production work at least for me. Don't remember the exact details. The reason I went back to it now is there were a couple of Waves plugins I wanted but that necessitated using the latest WLM s/w and that meant a minimum of Yosemite. Started having intermittent problems with my machine not shutting down properly. Fixed it on my iMac when I checked in Activity Monitor and found cpu usage of 150% in thread related to Spotlight. I put every drive in Spotlight's privacy mode and that cured that.

Or so I thought when I got my 2012 MacPro. Every drive in privacy mode in Spotlight so wasn't that. Right now until I get some money coming in I'm working off a pair of FW800 7200 rpm spinners for samples and recording. On the off chance these were the culprit I ejected them before shutting down and that cured this most recent experience.

It's interesting that this only happens after running PT for any length of time over an hour or so. Digital Performer - no problem for shutting down the computer. But if I run PT - then it hangs on shutdown. Then I make use of the Terminal command referenced a couple of posts back. Also interesting is being able to access the Terminal from the Dock even though Finder isn't running anhmore.

Yeah, it only happens to me after using PT for some measurable length of time.

What are the side effects of removing the core audio plugin?
