Default Outboard Gear > Pro Tools 8 > 96io

Hello out there,
i'm trying to think a simple way to connect my Racks into the Pro Tools enviroment :)

My setup is:

Mixing Console: Allen & Heath Saber 24/16/2 (1988 model)

Outboard (dynamics+pre+eq):
Avalon 737SP
Telefunken V672 (x2)
Amek/Neve 9098
TC Electronics - C300
Behringer - MDX 2200

Outboard FX:
Eventide H3500
TC Electronics M2000
Roland SRV3030
TC Helicon Voice Doubler

- - - -

1) First option is to just create a Patch Bay and connect all these in my Mixing Desk via analog old way (too noisy and loose all automation paradise :))

2) Second option is to find a smart way to connect them as FX or/and as Inserts via (e.g. Digidesign 96 i/0). But the 96 i/o has no outs (only 2)
So i think i need more outputs to make this reality!

I would like to hear your opinion...it would helps me a lot
Thanks!!!

Hi,

96 i/o has 8 in and 8 out so you can have 8 i/o into pro tools using the software inserts! you have to set this up using the software inserts using matching inputs and outputs for it to make use of the delay compensation!!

Thanks for your reply...
Yes this is the correct way i believe and might need:17 INs + 15 OUTs

that means go for the analog 192 i/o with 16ins and 16 out at least...
or the 96 i/o and might an oldie digidesign legacy 888/24 connect them together ?

Avalon 737SP - 1 in + 1 out (insert)
Telefunken V672 (x2) - 2 in + 2 out (insert)
Amek/Neve 9098 - 2 in + 2 out (insert)
TC Electronics - C300 - 2 in + 2 out (insert)
Behringer - MDX 2400 - 2 in + 2 out (insert)
Eventide H3500 - 1 in + 2 out (aux 1)
TC Electronics M2000 - 2 in + 2 out (aux 2)
Roland SRV3030 - 2 in + 2 out (aux 3)
TC Helicon Voice Doubler - 1 in + 2 out (aux 4)

ps: Also the the Digidesign 96 io that i found (http://www.vintageking.com/core/medi...c9b694ab93b750)
has 16 IN and only 2 outs not 8 ins and 8 outs!

Hi,

Unfortunately the 192 can have either 16 in and 8 out OR 8 in and 16 out. it can only have 1 optional i/o expansion fitted.

The link you attached is of a 96i (not the 96i/o) the 96i does have 16 inputs and just 2 outputs so is no good for your requirements!!

Best bet would be either 2x 96i/o OR 1x 96i/o with an 8 channel analogue to ADAT converter to give you another 8 i/o. this would give you total of 16 ins and 16 outs

The legacy 888 interface is no longer supported! so unless you want to stay fixed at 8.0.1 then its not going to work.

A good patchbay fixes all these problems. I'd recommend a solid DB25 patchbay.... And maybe the new HD I/O which you can get 16 I/O.

HD i/0 ...you mean the avid http://www.avid.com/US/products/HD-IO/features
OK this is nice idea but expensive for external outboard equipment, don't you think?

The HD I/O is avid's new replacement flagship interface. It can be ordered 8x8 like you have now. But the 96 I/O has always been the red-headed step child of the PT family.

The 192 is now replaced. The 192's PSU never let it do 16 I/O; the new one does.

And it's a LOT easier to get 16 I/O and better sounding then the 96 I/O - which, to get 16 inputs you'd have to find a separate A/D for 9-16 and that means third party conversion which, while recording sources together (such as, say, drums) you'd have different conversion times hitting PT's input. Good luck with that.

And if you want 16 I/O with your current setup to 'insert' your gear, you're now also looking for a 8 channel D-A and between the new costs of that and the 8 channel A-D I think you could have picked up the HD I/O or a second-hand 192.

If you are never using all that outboard at once, take Seans advice and get a nice patchbay. Wire your interface into it, and all your hardware. Then you can pick and choose how to route it, and customize your chain. The db25 Pbays are great. But if you are concerned about $... the pbays and cabling get expensive.
What interface are you using now?
Also, the "automation paradise" to which you are referring does not exist when using the hardware as/thru inserts. sb
