Those pinouts have caused lots of frustration over the years!
I can't speak to future plans (not my dept.) but I can pass along some totally useless trivia -
The 726 pinout is actually the mirror image of the Tascam AES/EBU pinout. In other words, looking at the rear of the 726 - if you could flip the 25-pin connector left-to-right, then you could use an off-the-shelf AES cable.
