Default PT 11 and Core Duo iMac

Hi folks, I know that "unsupported" doesn't mean "won't work", but has anyone any thoughts on whether my August 2009 2.66 GHz Core Duo iMac will run PT 11?

Unsupported only means that Avid is not testing that configuration. Actually it also means that Avid does nothing to prevent non-supported configurations from working.

But what it really means is that if you want to get Avid support, you need to have a supported hardware configuration. If that support is not important to you, then you could just as well try any configuration and see if it works or not, and perhaps figure out problems by yourself. But you surely won't get support from Avid if you do not have a supported configuration.

I can't find the link right now (it has been posted on one of the PT11 threads) but, where initially it looked like only i7s would be supported, Avid later updated what looks to still be an 'open' document and my 'late 2009' model i5 iMac is now supported ... can't remember if this included Core Duos but worth a search.

Avid doesn't test a wide variety of machines. Makes sense - testing costs money.

I've never used an Avid approved machine and I've been using ProTools since 2002 or so. Never contacted tech support. No problems.

Thanks for the replies. Running PT9 on Snow Leopard just now, so just a bit scared that the move up may just be too much for the old gal!

You and me both ... My 8 Core 2009 Mac Pro is supported (whew), but my 17" 2009 unibody 3.06 Core 2 Duo MacBookPro, with 8gb RAM, which I use for mobile working, is not.

However, I'm crossing fingers that PT11 will run on the MacBookPro too. I can't even replace it ... as far as I can see there is no 17" display available on the current generation of MacBookPros!

Backup. Test with 10.8.3 (BTW OSX 10.8.3 may not be as easy to get after 10.8.4 is released) You'll at lease find core system changes and other things need upgrading.
(Pro Tools 10, Any rosetta apps etc...)
then if all is well odds will better for you that 11 in 64 will work.

If your not happy with your computer and 10.8.3 restore from your backup clone.

Good call DetroitT, but that's only half the answer, is it not? I mean, suppose the iMac does work with 10.8.3; that doesn't necessarily mean it'll run PT 11, does it?

It pretty much does.

There won't be anything within PT code telling it to only run on certain CPU chipsets. If you can get the OS running on your machine, PT should run.

You won't be able to run the app as smoothly due to the lower specs of your machine, but with the performance improvements in PT11, you might find it actually runs better than PT10.

I've certainly got my fingers crossed ;-)

While my Mac Pro is supported, I'd be gutted to find that my 17" 1st generation unibody MacBookPro can't run it effectively.

Hell you can't even buy a matt screen on a MacBook Pro anymore can you? Or a 17" model? When the day comes to replace mine I'll be crying ... I love my matt screen.

I'm guessing it will be fine though, just not supported.
