Wavelab has a great A/B/C tool which lets you flip between source, processed and processed volume compensated to source. A real eye(ear)opener indeed once volume is taken out of the equation :)

Agreed. It's why I tend to go nuts with level metering plugins and/or spectrogram plugs.

Oh absolutely. Bypassing, referencing and walking away.

Come back with fresh ears periodically. This is especially important before finally committing. Never commit after a long stint of working on audio or anything creative really. After around 3 hours we start losing our objectivity.
