Default I/O Setup question

Working at home on an HD2 with one interface, I do a lot of preproduction. Then I go to mix on a console with lots of Protools outputs, but have to painstakingly reassign all the I/O for every track, bus output, and aux return. Is there an easy way?

If I import the mix studio's I/O setup I get duplicates/conflicts. I have to go through and rectify each one separately. If I nuke MY aux's assigned to hardware outputs and re-assign them to the mix studio's, I lose the automation on those outputs.

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here. It just seems to take up a lot of valuable $tudio time.

you need to delete the old io setup first ..you can export and save to re-import later. use control delete. then import the io you want to use.

Exactly. At the mix studio, launch Pro Tools and delete their IO setup BEFORE you open your session, then yours will load with no conflicts.

No no, thats not the problem - actually, there is no "problem" per se. I'm just curious if anyone has a faster methode of re-assigning I/O when splitting things out on a desk at another studio. I'd imagine the big guys have their assistant do it for them before they sit down to mix.

When I open my session, it opens fine. I then have to go and import the mix studio's I/O setup, then start re-assigning outputs and deleting duplicate assignments. I guess I was hoping for a "tips n' tricks" kind of thing for a tedious process.

tricks like ?

Command+Option for sequential assigning (Trk 1 out o/p 1, Trk 2 out o/p 2)
Shift+Option for limiting the assignment to the selected tracks
Shift+Command+Option for sequential assigning limited to the selected tracks

It would be nice if there was a "Remap Session I/O to System I/O" setting in Pro Tools for thing like going tom and Edit Room to an ADR. Foley or Dub Stage

I can just see it…

It looks a little like the “Import Session Data” window, where facilities (physical I/O, busses, etc.) used in the saved session appear listed on the left, and to the right of each such entry we have a pop-up allowing us to re/assign it to what’s available (and/or defined) on the current rig. The pop-up also features the option to have a non-existing buss imported/created.

The whole thing can be saved and recalled as presets.

Yeah, I could use something like that every week.

I was thinking more along the lines of something like what the DSP Engine does, but I'll take both

Not exactly, I got those

Yeah, something like that! Or maybe a dialog that would say, "these are the things that have changed in your I/O setup" with a list that follows, and the option to rename them or remap them. This would be a lot lot simpler than hunting through the pages of the I/O setup for bugaboos.
