trouble recording plug-in automation (wah pedal movement) on MIDI track

Hello,

I have the Electri6ity virtual guitar instrument on a MIDI track, running through Guitar Rig 5 with the Real Wah component, which is being controlled by the Rig Kontrol Pedal. Everything works great when playing live.
When I record, I get the notes played, the sustain pedal, pitch bend - everything but the Wah pedal movements. I'm trying to record the Wah pedal movements as well, do you know how to do this?

The easiest thing, if supported, would be to just record the automation directly in the MIDI track, but (according to the ProTools User Guide) it seems that for a MIDI track, ProTools does not support record automation for plug-ins. It seems like I'd have to create a SEND output on a Bus to another audio track, and then apply the GuitarRig5 Wah effect there. Plug-in automation is definitely supported in this configuration, I see the plug-in in the list, and I have some signs of life. But it's not working properly. I've been trying to do that for a while tonight but can't seem to get it to work - I must be missing something easy, I'm sure this must be supported.

If anyone can spot what I'm missing, I would appreciate it very much.
