Default PT 2018.1 crashes on boot, 12.8.3 worked perfectly [SOLVED]

So I wanted to check out the new features, and installed 2018.1.0.
I can't get past this error and consequent crash:

assertion in "e:\ code\ 222370\ ProTools\ App\ Document\ UProToolsWindowPresetMgr.cpp", line 250.

which comes up while Initializing Databases.
It also says (Use the Copy button to copy this message...) but the usual Copy button is not there.

I have tried:
- quit any irrelevant services running
- trashing prefs and restart - also between every other step
- uninstall+reinstall audio driver (Scarlett 2i2 1st gen)
- uninstall+reinstall Pro Tools
- moving all plugins to unused
- refresh iLok, remove and insert it physically
- updated Waves plugins
- tried with and without MIDI keyboards

Windows 10 Pro, 64bit.
Creator's Fail Update came in the other day, but that didn't kill 12.8.3.

I have followed all the optimization advice, and deactivated a lot of stuff like Superfetch etc in Windows.
Onboard soundchip is deactivated in BIOS, so are C-states.

Yes, the rig is overclocked, but has been running 24/7 stable since 2011.

Ableton Live works as usual.

Did anybody else have this problem?
I can't find anything on Google or here on the duc.

The error message:

I use Trasher btw, and it can't find any of the folders or databases ever since I installed 2018.

The drive says "e:\...." for the error. PT is installed on the C: drive, yes?

That's just from the compiler code messaging system (the developer had it on an e drive with the codebase.) Not relevant for the compiled program.

Can you get to workspaces? If you can, highlight the track presets, right click and select updated indexes. In fact, if databases are missing, go through all the locations (catalog and volumes) and have them update or rebuild by right clicking and selecting the appropriate option.

Thank you for answering, guys!
Ironically, I just now found a solution.

Made another user account (administrator) as per Avid's Troubleshooting guide's last resort.
Logged in there and started PT, which worked!

Then I found a more populated "Pro Tools" folder in the new user's "Document" folder, so I just copied that over to my regular user account.
Now PT starts like it should!

Not sure how this could have gone wrong, but at least for now the program starts. We'll see about working with sessions and 3rd pty plugs etc...

A little update on this issue:

I caused this all by myself.

This was some time ago, so I didn't think of it when PT didn't want to start.
Wanting to gain more control over cpu usage and background tasks, and get rid of bloat/spyware in Win10, I set about deactivating services etc.

Turns out that because I took ownership of several parts of registry and the C: drive, to get rid of the crap, TrustedInstaller couldn't do it's job anymore.
I'm still working out some kinks with other stuff.
What I learnt these last days: Don't take ownership to mess with your system, grant yourself permissions if you have to.

Or more generally, the lesson that never seems to sink in:

TL;DR: Don't mess with stuff on your workhorse if you're not 100% sure it's safe!

xD
