Default 1394 v 1394a v 1394b? FireWire 800?

I have one IEEE 1394a port on my motherboard.

I have two 1394 ports (no a) from a SIIG FireWire 2-Port PCIe Model NN-E20012-S2

Questions:

Should I invest in a FireWire 800 card?

Does 1394/1394a/1394b/1394c matter for Pro Tools?

You never tell us what devices you are connecting to, so its impossible to offer direct advice.

A "1394" card will be either an "a" (standard Firewire 400 port) or "b" (standard Firewire 800 port). In this case of the SiiG card its actually an "a" (coz its just Firewire 400). And you'll never see a "c" adapter card in the wild, thank God.

If the interface/peripherals you are connectign to are Firewire 800 then upgrade to a Firewire 800 controller card to gain benefit of the increased speed.

As usual everything is explained on Wikipedia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1394

A digi 002 is Firewire 400. Stay with the Firewire 400 card you have (and importantly it has the right TI controller chipset mojo.).
