Default Firewire 800 or 400? Which is better for PT\'s?

Although 800 is faster, I've heard you can get a lot of strange things happening when using 800 with Pro Tools. Anyone know the facts??

Default Re: Firewire 800 or 400? Which is better for PT\'s?

With Tiger - I have NEVER had any funny things happening to my FW800 Babies. I used to use 4 which were daisy chained. And that with 96khz. Wonderful.

Then I moved to Leopard and a world of trouble descended upon me. Many times PT would render an error that it could not get audio fast enough from the drives and I would have to force quit PT. Each time after this message my drive (the one that contained the session which triggered the error) would not be visible on the desktop anymore. I had to reboot the mac (still not visible) and open DU and repair the drive. Only then it would mount again.

I never tried FW400 on Leopard - like that. But I do know that mixing FW400 with FW800 gave me lots of problems in Tiger.

In addition - I must stress that above scenario was conducted using a G5 with Leopard and PT741. A setup that aint compatible. Now I'm on an 8 core harpertown with using ONLY internal hard drives and this cat is purring all day long.

To answer your Q - I would choose FW 800 over 400 any day. If Tiger+PT - If Leopard and Protools - then I'd go with internal ONLY.
