there are few interesting surround systems:

1. Genelecs Powerpack
2. Mackies HR624 or HR824
3. any other ones??????

which one would you recommend and why?
which ones are the standard for 5.1?

Charles,

There are many options to look at depending on your budget and the size of your room/mixing space. While I'm a big fan of Mackie monitors, I do feel the HR624's are better for surround than the HR824's do to the smaller size woofer. The compression driver is the same which (at least to my ears) seems to provide a more rounded sound with the sub over the 824's. Now if you're in a rather large space, the HR824's still might be the better solution. But IMHO, I really feel the best value out there right now for surround is the 5.1 package that Genelec provides. This includes (5) 1029A monitors with their new 7060A sub with a 10" woofer. If you're in a large space, this probably isn't the best combination for you...but it will fit most mixing environments for surround. The thing I love about this package is for well under $4,000... you get VERY accurate monitors with a Sub that has XLR inputs and outputs (yes!) and that is PER CHANNEL!! While I'm not doing surround, I am getting ready to purchase a set of 1029A's myself just for composition in my home studio.....

As far as standard, well.... on the higher end a popular setup is the JBL LSR12P sub with (5) LSR28P's.... I believe Warner Bros has (8) suites of this setup although I heard rumor they were switching to Tannoy's, but I don't know how credible that was.

i went with a set of blue skies and have not looked back once. i never had the chance to directly a-b them against other speakers, but the surround mixes i've done in my room (tiny little 8x12 or something, poorly treated, etc -- don't ask) have translated perfectly. i've taken mixes and edits from there to dvd systems and to theatrical dub stages and they hold up every time.

i'm actually curious if anyone has directly a-b'ed the blue sky systems against some standards like genelec or the jbl...

pretty cheap relatively speaking.

hi

the blue sky's are looking better and better

where is a good place to buy them in the east coast?

i'm still looking at the KRK V8's and Genelecs
but since i have a pair of KRK E8's
it would be nice to get another color in the mixes

are the Blue Sky's are too scooped in the mids?
i like mids
but i don't know how it will translate to a
surround mix.

any other comments?

have to get a 5.1 system by wednesday

please reply
thanks,
Charles

You really need to take a serious look at the Earthworks Sigma 6.2 monitors (if they are within your budget).

They are simply the most "real" monitors I have ever heard for under $10k each. None of the other monitors on your list are even close (except for the Blue skys which I have not heard).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I compared them for a few weeks, in stereo, against my LSR28's and found them to be very unpleasant, as did a couple of my colleagues. And I wanted to like them, because the price is right. They are very detailed and will pump out plenty of bottom, but to my ears everything sounded inexplicably odd. I'm sure, however, that other ears will find otherwise.

What about ADAMs? don´t they have any kind of package for surround yet?

Hey Brad, tell me more about the HR624´s. I was thinking of upgrading my simple Monitor Ones.
The 824´s are really cool, but not sure about marrying them with my small control room. Having to reanalyze room acoustics(modes, symetry) to have a cleaner sub bass.
any other news about it? some guys say that it is not worth going HR624´s; the 824´s are a much bigger leap.
Sorry for being off topic.
hope to ehar from ya!

hey krizman thanks for the feedback. i do love how detailed they are (great for editing vocals or dialog that REALLY needs to be clean). they don't have that "shine" that something like a genelec has (i'm not familiar with the LSRs you compared them to) but to my ears that is a good thing as it makes me work for that smoothness a little more. not that its hard to get, but i just always feel like i've actually created a good mix vs. just having the speakers sound nice...

$.02 - once i finally get into a well-designed and good-sounding room, i hope to back up and re-evaluate all the options out there...

charles, let us know what you end up with....

hi everyone

still deciding on the speakers
i narrowed it down to:

1. KRK V8 with Sub
2. BlueSky 5.1 system
3. JBL LSR system
4. Tannoy

i decided to pass on the Genelecs
i don't like the scooped mids sound of them

what can you guys tell me on the JBL LSR one's?
hope that anyone could tell me

i was going to get the Dynaudio Air 6
but when i saw the price
i burst in tears,

any other open/warm sounding 5.1 system around?

thanks,
Charles
