There's a nice shootout in SOS magazine (May issue) Ozone, Waves, Maxim and Sony Oxford compared.

Ughhhh. I must chime in here. Maxim is aweful. If you want to make everything gritty, it's great. It's far from being transparent. There are far better plugs out there for mastering than maxim. Don't waste your money.

well im consider getting ozone 3 for mastering or is there anything better at a decent price... but specifically for compression/eq/reverb whats best there besides waves since it costly?

give some example if u say maxim sucks.

haha maxim. well, i suppose i will come to its defense here. i think it sounds great until you really lay into the compression. then it might start sounding "gritty". But, here's to hoping you don't want to squash the hell out of your mix anyways. That being said, I am not sure Maxim is worth $500. I've used both Ozone and Maxim together before and have achieved decent results. If Ozone does two things badly, it's its "loudness maximizer" and its dithering. Maxim can cover both of those areas well assuming that your mix has decent levels to begin with. Now that I think about it, I guess you can get the LE version of Maxim in the Factory Bundle which costs like $100 in the store. That bundle is definitely worth it. That and Ozone certainly wouldn't be a bad option in my opinion.

HI,

perhaps you try try AC from www.mcdsp.com.

Not directly a Maximizer but does the job rather nicely.

And sou might give Sony Inflator (not a Limiter!) and Oxford Limiter a try,
IMHO your best option if you don´t want to burry your money with Waves.

my fav. combo is ex-Elemental Audios Neodynmium Plus the Sony Inflator.
Makes any further use of Limiters look like Stone age, for my uses.

Unfortunately you can´t buy Neodynium any more, aat least not for it´s
orginial price and teh new distrubution channel has to prove it can uphold the
quality.

so Ozone and Sony Inflator might be a great Option for you.

so far,

I have Waves Platinum and even after recently being reWUPed I still think it is a great package. You can download a fully funtional demo of waves to try out or at least you used to be able to. I can't tell you how Ozone works cause when I downloaded the demo, everytime I tried to use it it would cause my computer to freeze. Plus I don't really care for the interface. If I was just using Protools, I'd look seriously at a McDSP package. Universal Audio makes some great mastering plugins but probably not an option on a laptop. If you want a suite of plugs that can do about everything, I think Waves would be a great option. Or else look at Ozone for mastering and McDSP for general purpose plugins. Or maybe Ozone and Waves Platinum instead of Diamond unless you need some of the noise removal and sound design type plugins that you get with Diamond.
