apparently one is not supposed to use a delay effect as an insert.. I have been promptly "schooled" on that fact at gearslutz by none other than musicman.

Needless to say, i'll continue using delays in inserts whenever i feel like it, as well of course the more global ones doing multiple tracks as sends.

You completely missed what I wrote here. I did not reference the pick pack at all but the new delay.

Stomp boxes are a different animal. Classic delay pedals didn't have wet/dry controls. Besides I got schooled on the difference between wet/dry controls and using an effect on a send by IIRC Drew Mazurek so it's not just me saying something like this.

No doubt about it, different delays have different uses, all of them can go wherever you want unless they don't don't perform the way you want in which case it is wise to play by the rules, always keeping in mind that there are no rules... I think I couldn't have been more ambiguos here but I agree and understand your point, I'm just saying that at some point everything can be used to our advantage. Anyways, I've been helping a developer figure our a more useful wet/dry system for one of their plugins and I've learned there are more ways to approach this other than the known Equal or Linear power. So far independent wet and dry controls is the best option when possible.

The independent wet & dry controls would be the best and would be most like going the send way. When I was demoing the Soundtoys EchoBoy plugin I found distinct difference between using it as an insert and on a send. It has a single wet/dry control and when used as an insert it would miss the initial note or chord but on a send the sound was much fuller because it had every sound made. I think part of it is that the dry sound wasn't colored at all by the plugin. I also wonder part of that is the phase shift difference between the dry sound of the original track versus the dry sound coming from the dry/wet control of the plugin?

I haven't noticed anything with Echoboy Jr which is the one I use most but I'll pay attention the next time I insert the big one on a track. Was there any other plugin after the delay when that happened?

No - just EchoBoy.

Thank for sharing.
Does the Mod Delay III act in the same manner as EchoBoy?

Can't answer that as I don't use that plugin.

Just so you know Jack, today I've been recording guitars with Echoboy (I wanted to test this for you) and I haven't noticed any missing repetitions. Is there anything I could have missed?
