Default drum mics technique

im getting ready to buy a few mics for drums. dont want to spend too much though. i like the MXL line, but dont know enough about them. anyone got any ideas? also, can someone point me in the right direction for recording drums?

Excellent reading there, for sure. Great diagrams, well-written, and a good historical perspective.

I wouldn't advise anyone to get a "pack" of drum mics. Every one of these "packs" sounds cheap and doesn't hold value.

Instead, save up and get something like this:

3 or 4 SM57s (affordable, built like tanks, sound great on snare, toms, and guitar amps, good on floor toms)
AKG D112 or Shure Beta 52A or Audix D6 (great for live use as well)
For overheads, your most affordable option is probably a pair of Oktava MC012s, which are also good on acoustic guitar.
For ambience mics, get a pair of decent vocal mics (maybe Groove Tubes GT50s -- wait... Sterling Audio now -- ST50s).
