192 I/O unbalanced input in a balanced setup
Greetings from an old-newbie!
A quick 192io input related question. In my new brand 192 I/O I have a "+4 dBu Balanced input" scenario (+4 dBu DB-25 outputs connected to a balanced patch bay). For about a week I do need to route an unbalanced signal -10 dB(V) (consumer device) into a pair of 192 balanced inputs. I don't want (and I've no time) to change my setup or something. I'd like to know: is it possible to connect (via balanced patch bay) and record an unbalanced signal into the 192 balanced inputs (I don't matter the +4/-10 signal volume issue)? The "192 IO Guide" states: " You can connect -10 dB(V) signals to the -10 dB(V) inputs, but you will need to make sure that the negative terminals are not connected.", is it something? Any help and advice will be very appreciate. Ale |

Gosh, you'd hate to have to do anything!!!
Buy a Matchbox. Every studio should have one anyway. |

Re: 192 I/O unbalanced input in a balanced setup
You're right, more than 11 years on DUC...
BTW, the Matchbox is a good idea but is there any other suggestion? What is going to happen if I "simply" plug the unbalanced jack into the 192 balanced ones? Are the 192 circuits going to "destroy" themselves? |

Re: 192 I/O unbalanced input in a balanced setup
no, they won't be destroyed
I don't remember the pinout of the -10dBv inputs but I think you could just move the DB25 to the -10 input connector then back when your done.

Re: 192 I/O unbalanced input in a balanced setup
The pinout diagrams look pretty much the same but the 192 is in a not very accessible 19" rack and sadly I can't remove the interface for now.
Anyway moving the DB25 connector could solve the volume/impedance issue. My concern is the possibility to connect a mono unbalanced signal to a balanced connector (both +4 and -10) with "the negative terminals connected". I mean, could the 192 circuit be damaged in any way by a connection like this one? |

Re: 192 I/O unbalanced input in a balanced setup
only if there is a massive amount of DC offset on the signal but then you would have bigger problems
