Default How many cores for RTAS in playback engine?

I'm running 9.02 on a 2.26 8 core with a Magma chassis, HD2Accel. I have searched and not found info on the forum - as it is I am running all 16 cores with no problems. I seem to recall that I should be setting this to an odd number of processors.

This could also be that I suck at searching this forum.

Thanks for any help. Best...H

That should be 7 at a CPU limit of 99%. That makes a difference as well.

(apologies to Crizdee for jumping on his reply)

Thanks for the answers. Is there any rhyme or reason to this setting?? Or is this ProTools voodoo? Best...H

The rule of thumb is to keep it one less than the max processors you have. So if you have 16, put it at 15. It's not always the case, and your system may vary, so don't be afraid to play around to see what works best for you.

The idea behind this is that you are reserving one (or more) thread for the OS, background services and some plugins that use resources outside of Pro Tools.

Hi,

No problem, any information that is helpful is good.

I'm at 95% cpu limit

Have large session with 15 VI's running sweet. Kontakt x3 / battery / Pro 53 / FM8 x2 /Sylenth x2 / Gladiator / Vacuum x2 / Xpand x2 / Hybrid

I don't know why so many people can't seem to run VI's within PT and NI especially seems to get a bad rap!

Max - 1.
Anyway I have 8 cores without HT so I have my setting at 5. Works better than 7 for some reason. 8 was a total no go.

I am a bit confused, I am running a 8 Core, two 2.4 Quad Cores. My PT engines settings goes up to 16. Should I start at 15 or 7. Why do I have the option of 16 when I have an 8 core machine?

Hyperthreading doubles the number of logical cores your computer sees. Keep em at 15 or lower if you have 16 cores showing.

7.....Definately 7
RTAS can't use all the cores efficiently apparently (there are better explanations on the DUC about the topic).
Play with plugins and watch your CPU usage meter, 7 cores at 99% is working well for a lot of people.
