Default External audio drive, leave power on or off?

Hey all,
The external firewire drive I backup my session/audio files can be left powered on or off. Would you leave it powered on or off and why?

Any help appreciated,
J.D

I leave mine on (Maxtor 250s), because I don't like reaching around to turn them on everytime I fire up my rig, plus they have a sleep mode.

I've had two hard drives fail on me in the past year. Both of the failures were physical mechanical failures, not logical or electronics failures. I used to leave them on all the time, but now I turn them off unless I'm going to be using them. I figure that the less time they are running, the less chance there is of something going wrong.

(of course, backups would have been a good idea! argh!)
