Default Pro Tools 8 constantly crashing with no errors

Ok I've finally had it, I'm coming here for help because this problem is beyond me.

Running a MBP:
Snow Leopard 10.6.6
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB RAM
External Firewire hard drive using Firewire 800 out of the MBP into a 800 -> 400 adapter into the drive.
002 Rack with the serial ending in G connected to the MBP firewire 400.

Pro Tools 8.0.4
Waves 7.0 plugins (all compatible)

This setup has worked great up until just recently when it all went downhill (about a month ago). I've read through this forum like crazy, troubleshooting everything, re-installing pro tools about 10 times, trashing prefs, making sure I was compatible. I even went up to 8.0.5 but that did nothing. It started off with just the usual buffer errors. It would error out about 3 times and then crash. Now it just crashes without any errors. This all happens about 10 min after I open a session. I've tried multiple drives but that doesn't seem to affect it. So I'm stumped. Here's part of my crash report since it wont let me paste the whole thing:

Default Re: Pro Tools 8 constantly crashing with no errors

Waves has updated several times since 7, so an easy test would be to open a session with all plugins disabled(hold the SHIFT key while opening the session). If the session runs fine that way, then I would drag the Waves plugin files out of the plugins folder and test again. If that runs fine, then you know for sure that Waves needs an update.

Nope, that did nothin. Still crashing. I'm really at a loss. Do I buy a new MBP? Is that the answer? Upgrade to PT9?

Default Re: Pro Tools 8 constantly crashing with no errors

I am pulling my hair out!!!!!!! I've been at this for about a month now! Can anyone pleeeaase give me some advice?

Completely uninstalled waves plugins - that didn't work.
Re-installed pro tools another 5 times - that didn't work.
Used an mbox pro 2 instead of my 002r - that didn't cause a crash, but I couldn't even record anything because of the constant 6101 errors.
Tried multiple daisy chain combinations and multiple hard drives with the 002r and the mbox pro 2 - that didn't work either.

So what the hell is it? My interface? My computer? Can tech support please look at my crash report and try and give me some insight?

Thank you!

Have you tried setting the RTAS Engine Processors to ONE instead of the default TWO?

Also, maybe it's worth doing a Waves Uninstall. This means SEARCHING for any files with 'WAVES' in the title, establishing whether they are from WAVES plugins and deleting them.

You'd need to search with a program like EasyFind. They'll be files in the preferences and all over the place. TO TOTALLY DELETE WAVES FILES IS A DIFFICULT JOB. Do some google searches and you'll find where some of the hidden waves files reside......

http://www.devon-technologies.com/fi...syFind.app.zip

I think you'll find that if you can TRULY un-install waves then all will run smoothly and then you can install waves again and it will be smooth.

Whenever a waves installation goes over a previous one there's always problems. The reality is that a Waves un-installer doesn't actually totally uninstall waves products.

This could be many things, including bad RAM.

The only way to test RAM and be positive about the results is to remove some or swap it with known good RAM.

Also - have you tested from a new administrator account?

Another thing to try - reinstall the Mac OS X Combo Update for the OS version you currently have installed. Sometimes OS updates/installs are corrupt and installing the Combo Update again can help.

Thank you, I really appreciate the quick response.

I have tried using one processor, forgot to mention that.

I've searched for the waves files and deleted a bunch but i'll double check.

I did buy new RAM in the past 6 months so that could very well be the issue. I'll try re-installing the combo and using another account. I dont have my old RAM to check that so i'll have do these other ideas first.

Thanks again guys.

You can always pull out RAM sticks and rotate them in/out to try to determine if you have bad RAM.
