Default Laptop advice

I currently run ProTools 4.0.1 on a G3 desktop with an Audiomedia III card. I intend to add Max MSP to my set-up.
I want to buy a laptop to replace my audio workstation. I'm looking at the G3 laptop, 500mhz, 128mb SDRAM, USB, firewire. I am going to replace my scsi external drive with a firewire external. And I know I need a break-out box for the audiomedia III card.
Does anyone on this list have experience with ProTools on a laptop? I have heard from friends who run ProTools on desktops that ProTools does not work well on laptops. But they don't have direct experience with it on laptops, they've just heard this from other folks.
Can I rely on ProTools on a Apple G3 laptop w/ the above specs?
What problems have people had? If any.

Hi,

At this time I wouldn't use a laptop at a serious workstation and here's why. PT 4 w/AMIII runs on the AMIII card. Any upgrade to the software means moving to software that runs native on the Mac processor, using the AMIII for I/O only. I'm not sure that a 500 G3 with only 128M will give you more than about 8-12 tracks with modest plug ins, especially if you're running a slow interface like FireWire for your drives.

Duke,

I run PTLE Free version on my Powerbook G3/400 with 192mg ram. (I previously ran 4.3.2) It works fine for the smaller remote needs I have. For I/O look at Metric Halo Labs Mobile IO - www.mhlabs.com There are other less expensive I/O solutions in addition to boxes for your AMIII card. I also like the fact that I can run RTAS plugs with this LE Free system. I guess it boils down to what your needs are beyond your current desktop system.
