Default am I totally stupid ?

ok, I have a problem I can't solve
when I try to make an insert on a track on my brand new TDM system I only find a list of my 192 i/o outs
such as :
5.1
5.0
LCR
Left-Right
etc...

no bus wathever the number supposed to be with a single 192 i/o
no 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

same thing if I create an Aux track, no bus to put in insert

same thing for sends, I can make them appear with the dialog box (menu)but then can't assignate any out other than stereo or 5.1...

what am I missing ?
what box to check to make them appear ?

I've been searching in Hardware settings, i/o, wathever...

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP !!!!!!

Go into your "I/O Setup" Window in Pro Tools and:

For a quick fix, hit the "default" button. All of your I/O should be reset appropriately for your hardware.

Or,

In the same I/O Setup Window, Add the busses, inputs and outputs you need manually.

Hi Phil,

I sent you an e-mail after seeing your response, thanks! I appreciate it. I enjoy helping out when I can. I have always been a musician first and I have had to learn this technical stuff the hard way. I've done so, basically by breaking everything once before getting it right.

John is right, and you can ALSO "name" the I/O if it makes it easier for you, and sometimes, this is a good thing to do because it will allow you to see pathways by knowing exactly what preamps, outputs, etc, are being used by you.

Example: Let's just say that you are using the 16 focusrite silver series preamps in your Control 24.
Go into I/O setup and click on "Input"
Create a "Stereo" path and name it Focusrite 1-2
It should, by default, create two mono sub paths and label them Focusrite .1L and Focusrite .2R
Continue doing this for each set of stereo inputs up to 16 if you have that many inputs on your 192 I/O.
If Pro Tools does not create sub paths for you by defualt, then after you create the first stereo path and name it Focusrite 1-2, you will have to create two "mono" sub paths and you could name them Focusrite 1 Left and Focusrite 2 Right.
Do the same for Focusrite 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 etc.
I am sure that PT will do this all by default, and since you have this choice, you can do this, and actually see the physical inputs and outputs which can sometimes make it easier to understand your routing.

You may do the same with the busses. I know that at the college I used to teach at, we labeled bus 1 output as "Verb send" and it reminded students that they could use "Bus 1" as the default pathway for a reverb. We then labeled the Bus 1 input "Verb return" for inserting a reverb on an Aux channel.

That should get you through it, just remeber to hit "export settings" after you are finished, and then maybe label it something like Phil's I/O 2-10-06. Now, in a case where you might need to import these settings into another session if your preferences get trashed, or more lilely, if you get a session from another studio with a different setup...you'll now have these settings you made in a folder. They will have a .pio extension.

if now, you get sessions from other studios that used pro tools, after you open the session, you can go to setup, then I/O, and choose import settings to import your settings to the new session from the other studio. Now the session from another studio will have your routing and you can keep moving. You will have to probably delete the busses or inserts that double what the other studio had, and make sure that you delete yours that match and not the other studio's busses and inserts, or you may lose one of their stem mix routes.

Don't forget, John is still totally right, if you hit "Default" and use those settings, you can still operate fine, and a lot of us prefer to go that route if we are comfortable with knowing how Pro Tools routes things, but this can be a good way to start out if you are unsure of where and how things are routed in the box.

Regardless of either choice, once you use either on of these ways in a session and you save and close it, you will now have a "last used settings.pio" in that folder so you can always import that, if you are unsure of what you need. That will work if it did for your last session.

Good luck!
