And maybe it is or maybe it is or isn't a worry. I am not tech savvy enough to make a knowledgeable statement or guess either way But given the fact that there have been numerous threads involving heat issues and throttling in IMac's , Mac Mini's , and notebooks (granted all different than Cheesegrater space and cooling wise ) all using NVMe tech, it seems increased heat from NVMe use, is a consideration in a general sense . Then also common logic kinda dictates that if it wasn't a worry, the Crest would not have fan. There is little reason to suspect that Crest would go the added expense to design and implement placing a totally needless fan in the mfg process. As it makes no logistical or even profit increase sense to do so in general. Because mfg profit margin is usually based on a fixed % over cost, and needlessly increasing cost and reflecting it in price, nets a Zero Sum gain (something I do know something about) I have so far opened and played around with about 10 previous sessions and I think (if I remember correctly) they include a couple sessions I would get "can't get audio fast enough" CPU errors . Which so far has not happened which if continues, is a definite improvement and things do seem snappier (but that could be conformation bias kicking in ) but so far I am pleased and now just contemplating the next move to install Mojave But as I said this all way above my pay grade My real world test will be when I do a new music video in FCPX and check out the rendering time.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
Update. I found the screw driver and the screws hidden underneath all the styrofoam. I will have to tear it out again some day. It has however worked flawlessly for a week without the screws that hold the blades down.
I would not dream of disabling the fan in the crest card, but I will say this. I have a sintefex cx2000 which has a way too noisy fan. I asked sintefex and they said the fan in probably only necessary if you add the ad/da card that literally would fill half the box which is now empty in my unit. I disabled the fan and tested it. it didn’t even get warm. So I kept it out. That was 15 years ago and it still rocks.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
Ghostwriter I've been following your many trials and tribulations since the beginning of this thread. I have a Mid-2010 Cheesegrater (new term for me but I like it) and was considering what you were doing, Crest card with two NVMe drives, one as a boot drive with ProTools the other with instruments. The question I have is are you getting out of this what you thought you would, specifically when using ProTools. Haven't forgotten Arche3's comment several pages back " I don't think protools will use 5 percent of the bandwidth of these things." I currently have an SSD boot drive with ProTools in a PCi slot and an SSD in one of the bays with instruments. With a little drive shuffling I could get both SSDs in PCi slots. Unless you were starting from scratch or one of your old drives went bad I'm wondering if all this is worth what you would get out of it using ProTools.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
Are you able to determine that from the iSat app ?
The reason I ask is because that being the case I am now wondering if the extra fan noise may be the bottom of crest card resting on/touching the top of the Sapphire RX580 fan housing as it seemed pretty tight when I put the Crest in
