Default need some tips / thoughts here ....

I'm thinking of expanding my system to do the following,...... :

I want to have more analog in/outs to hook up more analog gear : dynamics / eq ..... without having to re-patch all the time. The 888/24 's being hell expensive just to add analog insert / inputs , Ad8000 out of the question ...... still, I don't want to compromise by going 882/20 .......

Currently I'm looking at : Adat Bridge, which would give me a 16 ch / 24 bit lightpipe to PT in combination with one rme interface to start with, possibility to hook up second one later on ..... : http://www.rme-audio.com/adi/adi8ds.htm

any other thoughts / ideas / tips ???? Again, I want to keep it 24 bits , 96k would be nice for future .....and ofcourse less expensive than 888/24.

TIA

I use the RME/ADAT bridge solution for analog inserts.

Very happy with it

Low latency too!

Jules,
The 24-bit ADAT-bridge is out, it's sitting in my rack next to me.

Speer, the RME will most certainly be used to interface analog gear. As Chris knows, I got the same setup: ADAT bridge and 2 RME ADI-8 Pro. It gives flawless results.
Also, the RME has a TDIF interface. I connected a TDIF > 4xAES interface by Tascam to it, and now I can also insert 4 digital effects via AES, so the 888 is no longer necessary.

But I agree the old ADAT bridge will only pass 20 bit so putting a 24 bit AD/DA converter in front of it might be a waste.

Cheers
Arthur

Speer,
Digi did post an announcement on the 24 bit upgrades here and the upgrade price is $295 per unit. I just had two of mine done two weeks ago and they turned them around in 24 hours. Total bill $590.
I have both the RME and the Alesis units (and AD-8000's.) They both work fine. I use the Alesis for reverbs sends and returns and the RME for analog compressors and eq.

Thanks, LansRec.

I went to Digi's "hardare upgrades" page. It says $795. Someone at Digi must have made a mistake. This is very good news.

Maybe Digi has turned a new leaf after all.

This is just in time, too, as the Kyma Capybara will soon have lightpipe support, and 24-bit Gigastudio cd-r's are starting to happen.

Bummer.

Not that much of a bummer. The jitter caused by the lightpipe was presumably due to the DA attempting to slave its clock to the lightpipe input. In a PT setup where all pertinent devices are slaved to a single ("house") clock, this is not as significant an issue until you start losing data. I regularly use a 5m lightpipe for transfers into PT (and a 5m BNC cable for wordclock) without any problem whatsoever. This is the "cheapo" brand too, so I imagine with monster I could double the length w/o worry.

$795 is the price of the original 16bit nubus adat bridge to the current one, i believe.

and you can use an adat bridge and rme unit for INSERTS? as in, in and out at the same time? do you slave it to a master clock source?
