Sorry, been away for a few days...

Yes, the "freeze" is on the startup screen, when it says that it's setting up MIDI devices. Just stops for 45 seconds. I don't think this is a ProTools problem as such though because I get the same delay opening up Live. I'd guess something in the MIDI subsystem? I'll do a bit of digging around.

I have installed the latest 10.13.6 sup 2 update. Couldn't see a reason not to as it was brand new out of the box. I did this before installing everything, which took an age....

Haven't had too much time yet to test how things are but I'm not seeing a great deal of difference in cpu usage at different buffer sizes. This is a big difference to what I saw on previous versions. And I'd just got used to playing slightly ahead to compensate for that extra latency...

The only problem I do have after installing everything is that Structure doesn't have anything in its database. I can find the samples and instruments and these load up fine. If I go into Database it says that it's building the database and this could take some time. I think we're talking time in geological proportions here because I've left it for ages and still nothing. This is particularly dumb as I've run the disk speed checker on that drive and it's reading and writing at close to 3GB/s. Leaving it for an hour means that it could in theory read over 10TB and I don't think that the Structure library is quite that big!. If it is I'd like to know how it fits onto the drive...

Yes, 10.3.6 works flawless like yosemite. This OS update and PT 2018.7 is the best setup since a couple of years. I hope they will be able to fix the rounding error at least on midi clips that drives me crazy

whats going on here :)
Avid says that 10.13.4 is not qualified because of CPU overloads and all the people here says exactly the opposite.
:) maybe I will give 10.13.6 a chance.

But I don't think it solves the CPU spikes with big plug in chains on masters.
that would be too cool.

1) Can anyone confirm the above? I run into CPU spikes with very intensive Plug In loads on master tracks even at the highest buffer settings. Does this upgrade solve this issue or improve on recent OS-PT combinations?

2) I think I am reading conflicting reports here on Buffer setting improvement. Has anyone found that the latest OS-PT combination has forced the buffer setting to be higher than previous versions?

Big thanks.

Have you tried systematically removing third-party plugins from your system until the problem potentially disappears? In the past, when I've heard about CPU spikes at high buffer sizes its due to a plugin that needs to be updated or removed (remember, you can experience CPU spikes due to a plugin that is simply loaded when Pro Tools starts; it doesn't have to be inserted in the session.)

Sure, this would be an apt analogy if one was able to start up one’s body from a different partition.

Probably a clean install would be best?

Thanks
You should convert to APFS only if you use SSD, not with HD

I think that was a graphic issue because by closing the edit window the sparks went away as well. BTW now it seems that the 10.3.6 has fixed this. Don't understand why Avid is still on the 10.3.3 recommendation
I was just looking into this. I was on 2018.7 and macOS 10.3.5 and it was a nightmare. Went back to 2018.4 and things are running soother. Then I saw Avid's 10.3.3 alerting not to go past that...

Does anyone else have more info on if 10.3.6 and PT 2018.7 is good to go?
