Re: recording live
Btw, i personally MUCH prefer to record shows/events to hardware recorders (as continuous BWFs) and import the files in PT for editing and mixing.
Unless I 'm doing a live-to-air, in which case I prefer to use a hardware mixer as well (digital console).

Re: recording live
+1 for the audience mics!
Knowing which board you're using would help a lot... But if you can even get a few sub-mixes like Drums, Guitars, Vocals, etc., and then combine those with the audience mics you could get a pretty decent representation. I've used a Zoom H4n for the audience mics before and it worked out quite well |

Re: recording live
Just rent a splitter and a rack full of preamps and record it straight to PT.
I do this all the time and the only extra work is setting up the splitter and preamps. That is also the great benefit because you can set your recording levels independent of the FOH mix. And if you do both with PT you can skip the splitter (unless you want to offload monitors for some other guy).

Re: recording live
Why don't you get a mobile truck with support crew while you're at it. That's the only real way to go as true connoisseurs know...

Re: recording live
So many ways to do this now. That's largely the reason you don't see audio trucks much any more. The only real reason for a truck is if you need to make an accurate live mix at the same time, or if you have a short turn-around window and need to deliver a fixed mix quickly.
I did all of the music for the new Arsenio Hall Show (cancelled, alas) in my truck with an HDX|3 system running 11.0.2. Worked flawlessly and allowed me to make quick fixes in the 15 minutes we had before the feed to the net. If you're really interested I strongly suggest you seek out Joel Singer. He lurks here and contributes from time to time. Easily the most knowledgeable guy I know about the delicate relationship between Pro Tools, live recording, skittish musicians, television, and where to go for dinner. Peter

Re: recording live
Peter, i was actually responding to JFreak. My post was intended as a tongue in cheek and slightly ironic commentary since, considering the apparent ressources and relative needs of the op, what he was proposing could arguably be compared to trying to kill a fly with a bazooka...
I guess my intent wasn't so clear after all... Cheers!
