Default Female perspective

quote:
Hmmm, interesting.
Well, there is one female I know of who is a member of this list and she isn't offended by pick up lines.
In fact she could probably offer some feedback as to how effective your pick up lines may be.

Well,
My apologies for inadvertantly being misleading.
This comment was not intended to turn my thread into a discussion on pickup lines. It was merely intended to convey the message that I wasn't offended by pickup lines. They either work or they don't . I was actually dropping a hint about who I am.
With all due respect, I'm not surprised that my old thread was closed. So, please guys (and girls), lets keep things on topic.

I was actually being quite serious in asking if there were any other female members of this list. I have worked extensively with male and female clients over the years and have enjoyed almost all of it. I am interested in finding out if other females have had similar experiences.

I have found this forum in general to be very informative and sometimes amusing. It has actually become quite addictive (a bit like music really ).

BTW if anyone is interested in my background I have a website. The URL is www.danniielle.com
I have only just FTP'd it and it isn't finished yet but the 'Who is Danniielle??' link is active. I will post when I have some mp3's of my music on the site.

Regards,
Danniielle (AKA Doc).

Our Doc is woman - Cool!

Beauty, Brains AND Pro Tools - Now that’s what I call an “11” - To bad you’re in another country...

Off Topic: Since you’re a video compression specialist, I have a question for ya: The latest Quick Time 5.0.2 still can’t seem to handle most AVI’s - “required compressor not found” I downloaded the Indeo®Video extensions 3 thur 5 per this Apple article, and still no luck. I’ve read there are so many different types of AVI compressions being used that even the Windows world can’t keep up. Is there any hope for the MAC? Why doesn’t everyone just use MPEG since it seems to work well on all boxes?

bassmac,

Thanks for your kind words.
Without starting the 'pickup line' thread again (How many females ?), that is the kind of line (intro?) that brings a smile

Do you know what codec/s were used with the AVI's you've tried to open in Quicktime?

quote:
I’ve read there are so many different types of AVI compressions being used that even the Windows world can’t keep up.

Too true. My offline video editing system is based on Matrox Mjpeg (AVI) compression (on PC) and surprisingly the AVI files WILL play in quicktime on mac. However, they WON'T play on another PC without the Matrox hardware. Figure that one out

Mpeg4 on PC is a fantastic format. I use VirtualDub to encode to AVI using this codec and MP3 for audio at 320k/s. The results are stunning but the files won't play on my Mac

quote:
Why doesn’t everyone just use MPEG since it seems to work well on all boxes?

Good question. Particularly when it comes to web content. One possible reason is that Mpeg is not as efficient as some of the newer formats, particularly Mpeg4 (yes, it's a Micro$oft product) and whether we like it or not, PC's are more popular. Also, not everyone has a broadband net connection (myself included ). Rural Australian telecommunications are a long way behind with internet technology (Just try downloading the PT5.1 update via 56k ).
However, that still doesn't explain why some choose to use outdated codecs like Indeo and Cinepac or other uncommon Mjpeg codecs.

If I need to make a video preview from my NLE's for Pro Tools, I usually encode the files to Quicktime using the H263 codec at 256 x 192 or 320 x 240 (depending on the importance of the preview window and CPU available in PT). This seems to combine the fastest encoding vs quality and resource usage on both PC and Mac.
Once completed, I bounce from PT to a new movie and import the whole file back into the NLE for visual sync. It is usually necessary to shift the audio one or two frames to compensate for latency in PT.

Hopefully not too far off topic,
Doc.

Let's see, about a hour and 1/2 for 5.1 and roughly a hour for 5.1.1

At least that's what it took for my updates...

The 5.1.1 update took about 3 hours from Aus. Obviously, there is a bottleneck or two between my ISP and the Digi server.
I downloaded system 9.1 update from apple yesterday (all 70 megs of it). Took about 4 and a half hours. Fortunately there were no dropouts.

Seems at this point I am the only female member of the DUC. Not that it really matters (I love this forum), I am just curious. 'Spose it's a bit like being a female rally car driver or motor mechanic. Even during my electronics apprenticeship, I was one of only two females doing the course.

Never really been one to follow conventions just because everyone else does. I guess thats why I fit in so well in this industry
After all, music would be pretty boring if nobody took risks or bent the rules (they had to be created in the first place anyway).

I'm preparing an MP3 of a song I call 'Outside Everything' which should be on my site in a couple of days. I intentionally twisted a few rules for this one. It was recorded partly on 16 track analog, partly on my 001 and mixed on my 001.

B4N,
Dannii.

Doc, Thanks for the compression info. Here's a great page I got from MacFixit that solved the problem - maybe it can help your Mac out as well.

I got things working using the DivX Player 1.0b10 and Window Media Player 6.3. Currently this seems to be the only work around. WMP6.3 doesn't need to run, it just needs to be installed to provide code for the DivX Player. With this combo, the key is to download (save link as) the AVI video, then open it with DivX Player, if you just click on the movie link, the Quick Time "opening with AVI to QT Utility" screws it up so you can't play it.

Thanks again - let us know when your music is up.

bassmac,
Thanks for the link. I had an old version of the DivX player that had expired. It was a bit ordinary anyway so it will be interesting to compare the new player.

I have just finished a rough mix of 'Outside Everything' and will probably ftp it tomorrow. I'll post once it's done anyway.

I had a read of your profile and was amused by your stated occupation "Reading the DUC" LMTO. I can relate to that
