Default Sync HD going..slowly

Our Sync HD unit is 18 months old. About 3 weeks ago it lost contact with ProTools a couple times. Then yesterday complete failure.

I benched it, It booted ok, then about an hour later the display flashed a few time and filled with 8's.

Before I pull a repair ticket, anyone else have this problem?

It's running fine on the bench now...It's been 2 hours.

I did do a re-set to factory default.

Mine is unhappy when in a warm rack.
Removed from rack and it’s been stable ever since.

Thanks. It was in a warm rack. I'll give it another day running on the bench.

I second that... I added a blank rack space above all mine and they work fine now.
I never got crazy 8's... but they definitely freaked out.

I have the same issue. If the ambient temp of my closet gets above 90 degrees, the Sync HD starts connecting/reconnecting.

I also fixed it by addidnt a black space above and below, but I still have to add a fan to increase air flow around it.

In a funny side note, my old equipment closet had much worse airflow and caused a huge problem with the Sync HD. I placed a meat thermometer probe on top of the Sync, and set its remote to alert me at 105 degrees. When the surface of the Sync hit that, I knew it was time to open the closet and take a break.

Thankfully I have AC in the new closet.

A meat thermometer! Good idea. I should have one around here somewhere. I raise beef...for fun.

Here's what I found:
1. The unit seems to runs much cooler on the bench.
2. It heats up when connected to the HDx card, loop sync Etc. It gets hot!
3. I did provide a rack space above and below.
4. I reset the firmware. v2.2.1
5. Reset to factory settings. Then reset my parameters.
6. Running fine with no clients here.

Thanks everyone for the help..including the Avid guys in support.

I ran into the same problem before I placed it in the machine room with dedicated air conditioner.
And even though I have no problem now I think a solution to free space rack above and below of Sync HD is not an engineering solution.
Avid should investigate and say clearly what cause this issue and how to fix it.
But yes, I am getting rhetoric again...
