Dual Xeon CPU for Protools 12
Well there doesn't seem to be much information out there so I wanted to start a post about my current build. I am getting the Intel S2600CP2J Motherboard and going to run 2 Intel Xeon E5-2650 2.0 GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo) 20 MB L3 Cache LGA2011 95W Eight-core CPUs. In a Enthoo Pro Series Case White Steel Tower. I have 16 Slots for DDR3 Ram. Max Memory will top out at 512 GB. I am considering getting 8gigx8 for 64 Gig total. Using a EVGA SuperNova 750 B2 Bronze Power Supply. For my production drive a Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512GB. I haven't quite decide about my video card at this moment. Anyway, if it all works I should have 16 cores and 32 threads running at 2.80 GHz. All for under 500.00.

Re: Dual Xeon CPU for Protools 12
I hope it works. The single "make or break" detail is the motherboard chipset. If this is what's in the z800 workstation, it should be good. Keep us posted

Re: Dual Xeon CPU for Protools 12
I run a 8 core X79 based XEON the E5-2687W and while it is old and there are better/newer/faster processors out there.....I got a great deal on it and didn't have to change my mobo, just dropped it in.
Yes the older E5's are really good deals for really stable and robust systems. and while most work fine...as Dave said the chipset of the mobo is what will make or break you.

Re: Dual Xeon CPU for Protools 12
I just bought a 3.4 GHz i3 (lack of coin, got it used on eBay for $60) for a spare Z97 motherboard I had laying around which is intended as an East/West VI server. It's running Win 10 with 8 Gb of RAM and I put PT 10 on it for testing, so far it's doing really well which shocked me. If this is any indication, your dual Zeons should be bang up.
I've been doing this long enough and back in the day, Saw Studio or Nuendo 1.0 with the fastest CPU (I'm talking an Abit motherboard with dual 366 MHz Celerons) and 16 Mb of RAM was the rage on some of the rec.audio.pro discussions. These days, just about any modern CPU is going to deliver astounding performance in our chosen field. I started with a 12 channel console & 8-track tube Ampex tape machine, digital was a clock on my night stand (I think, long time ago). I would have given anything for dual Zeons and PT 10 back then.
