Default basic editing question !

OK I feel like a newbie this morning ...... a very basic one, please help! :

In OS9 : I've selected an area for editing with the selection tool.
If I want to adjust the length of the selected area, I hold shift down and click.

In OSX : I do the above and lose my selection.
Can't seem to find anything in the preferences or the manual as to how this is different! Feeling very dumb, please help!

Thanks.
