Computer Keyboard as Midi Controller

This question might have been asked and solved already. But i couldnt find anything.

Is there a program that let you use your computer keyboard as a controller like the floating keyboard in Logic when you turn on caps lock?

I am hunting for one on google, found one but its $15. Wanted to get feedback and opinions on any program that will let you do this, so i can sequence on my laptop while at the dmv.
