Formatting FW Drive with Drive Setup Utility

I just got a 80GB OWC Mercury Elite 7200RPM Combo FireWire Oxford 911. I'm running OS 9.2 so I had to use their utility to set up the drive. Then I used the Special->Disk Erase function on the drive. I have all my FW extensions installed and made sure to disable all the ones that came with the HDST disk. I am able to save PT files to the ne FW drive and they appear to playback fine. The one thing I can't do is format this drive using the standard Drive Set Up Utility. It says, "format not supported". Is this correct?

You format using the Special-erase dics, function for fw drives.

get rid of (delete, not disable) ALL non apple fw extensions.

I realize this might be a dumb question but I'm a life long PC person so extensions are new to me. What is the proper way to delete extensions?

TO delete them you go to your extensions folder which is located in the system folder of your Boot drive. There is also a folder called extensions (disabled) which is where the disabled extensions will be. You can just drag them to the trash.

However, there is no reason to delete rather than just disable, except that if they are deleted you can't accidentally turn them on. But a disabled extension and a deleted extension will do the exact same thing in your system: nothing.

Heres how to reformat the drive:

1-Backup all important data that is on your FireWire drive
2-Highlight the FireWire drive on the Desktop and choose Special > Erase Disk. Choose Mac OS Extended formatting and click OK.
3-Once the drive is formatted, disable/remove all third party FireWire extensions and restart the computer.

Go to the Apple Menu > Control panels > Extensions Manager and disable any third party FW extensions (HDST, Silver Lining, Anubis, etc).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Not exactly true. As you stated, disabled extensions can accidentally get turned on, deleted ones cannot. IMHO tis best to delete something you know you don't need and if you do use it can/will cause you problems.
