Yes Jack, I was referring to your thread about the bad video card. ^^^ I think I ran across another thread about a bad video card in an iMac, but that may have been in a different forum.

It most certainly will come with the newest OS....and not be downgrade-able.

The prices will most certainly drop for the trashcan once the Modular MP is out (especially if the modular MP is a hit)

Best bet is to wait......and see.

Of course if Apple had listened in the first place and never made the trashcan like that.....oh well that's another rant for another day.

Ok cool, I will be patient then :)

What's another year to wait after waiting 3 already.

Yeah the new os will kill too many things..

So my options are simple.. trashcan or imac pro. the latter can run HS and the trashcan can definitely run S.

:)

I realise you have HDX, (in the sonnet?) but I mean, for your Vi;s, what buffer do you have chosen..64? 128?
The Sonnet rack isn't that loud. The fan on the Mac Pro is louder when it boots up than the Sonnet rack. But I have everything housed in an ISO rack from Sound Construction Supply.

My buffer on the HDX system stays at 1024. We don't use any VIs. All we do is record live shows, usually symphonies, operas, jazz shows etc... We feed the HDX system from our Dante network through Focusrite Red 4Pre and RedNet HD32R. Stability is king for us. But I've recorded a full 64 channels at a time for over 3 1/2 hours straight before, two shows a day with not a single hiccup.

Nice MP setup - in the rack and a DVD/CD player

Honestly, that lack of an optical drive is the biggest thing that pisses me off about the Trash Can Pro.

We're a commercial, multi venue performing arts facility. I still deliver show recordings to clients the night of and take in audio for show cues and walk in music on CD. We can't live without a DVD/CD reader/burner.

When I saw the option for the Sonnet xMac Pro Server chassis with the Blu-ray burner and space for two 2.5" SSDs and a 3.5" HD, I knew that it was going to be the way to go. I've got 2 1/2 TB of solid state storage and another 4TB of spinning hard drives on this system between the Thunderbolt/PCIe expansion and external USB 3.0 drives.

DAMN that sonnet looks awesome.. i want a blu ray burner myself (i just trust keeping hard blu ray backups of everything)

and i can put the hdx card(s) in that right?

But how do you access the thunderbolt 2 ports of the mac pro? I see the 4 usb 3 ports, but not the TB. Must be missing something. if there is one thing i need on that mac pro, it's the TB ports. I will need 2 just for displays (unless i can daisy chain apple T Bolt displays but i can't seem to find a firm answer to this... in any case that would mean i only need to use 1 Tbolt port).

The one thing i love about the trashcan is that it has 3 independent thunderbolt busses over the 6 ports, so you have 3 busses of 20 gb/s. Awesome.

The bottom section of the Sonnet rack, where you see the vent holes, has three PCIe ports, that connect to the MacPro via Thunderbolt cable. The upper section has a removable chassis where you can add one of several different expansion chassis for hard drives, optical drives, SSDs, etc... They call it a Mobile Rack device mounting kit. The things in that expansion kit connect to a PCIe SATA card that installs in one of the thee PCIe slots in the lower expansion section.

See here

The whole thing is designed for the rear ports on the Mac Pro to come off at about a 45 degree angle up and to the left (as you look at it from the front). You have to connect your Thunderbolt cables before you install the other expansion kits, or else you won't be able to connect them later. The whole thing goes together like a jig saw puzzle, and to be honest the install instructions aren't that great. But once you lay everything out it starts to make sense.

There are extensions built into the back panel for the USB and HDMI and RJ45 ports and power cable. But I guess Thunderbolt requires active electronics in the cable ends, and you can't build an extension cable for them, I guess? That's why you don't see the Thunderbolt ports on the back of the xMac Rack.

I don't hear the fans in the ISO rack at all when the door is closed. The HVAC in my booth and the fans in my ClearCom CellCom unit in my main equipment rack are louder than the workstation rack when clsoed.

We bought this 14U rack, it was just under $2,500 US with shipping. But they are in Nashville, Tennessee.
