Default path to session contains illegal characters

Hi Folks,
Got this message today -path to session contains illegal characters (/) -

I have been recording on this computer for years and all of a sudden I got this error message so not sure why all of a sudden.
When I look at the disc name which is easy to change, there are no illegal characters in it.
The actual source disc is named - Kingston SNA-DC/U Media - and i dont know how to change that.
For now to start a new session I'm opening up an older session that Im not using anymore, erasing the tracks and renaming the title.

Anyone know a quick fix on this one....Is there something to click in preference or i/o set up?

Thanks

"/" is an illegal character

To change it, just double click on the name and you can rename and remove the illegal character.

Hi BScout,
Thanks for the reply.

If I click - get info - yes, I can change that name. But it has no bad characters in it.
When I open disc utility I see that the source name for the disc does have a / in it. Thats the one I dont know how to change.

Also, it all worked fine for the last year and today I got the message for the first time. Leading me to believe I need to click something to get it back to where it was a few days ago when I last started a new session and it worked fine.

The disk media name has no influence on the path. Only the volume name. So we are talking two different things. Your problem is in the path name but you are looking in the wrong place.

Find your Pro Tools session in Finder, do a "Get Info" (command+I or you can do it from the right click menu), copy the line that says "Where" and paste it here. You will be able to highlight it and right click > copy. Then you can paste it here (it won't look the same as it does in Get Info; don't worry about that)

It's in that name (or the name of the session itself) that the problem is.

A possibility, if the session is stored on a separate drive is that the drive may be going bad. I had an instance a couple of years back like that. Drive worked fine for 2+ years and then started getting the illegal characters message. Turns out that the bridge (interface) board in the drive was in it's death throes. Got it replaced (Glyph GPT 50) and it's been fine.

On a windows machine, I can right-click on any drive and rename it. Not sure, but do we still have the 11 character limit on drive names? "Kingston SNA-DC/U Media" is way longer than 11 characters

He's clearly on a Mac as that's the kind of thing that shows up in Apple Disk Utility as the root name of the hardware drive. It doesn't have anything to do with volume or partition name and is unchangeable (volume/partition names are changeable.)
