Default Re: Rolling Stone Mags greatest guitarists ?

Rightio, heres my list of guitarists that have really touched me in some special way - ummm ... that doesn't sound terribly good .

This is in no particular order:
  • Jimi Hendrix
  • Eddie Van Halen
  • Yngwie Malmsteen
  • Angus Young
  • Tommy Emannuel
  • Eric Clapton
  • Diamand-Dimebag Darrell
  • Rusty Cooley
  • Joe Satriani/Steve Vai/Kirk Hammett/Dan Spitz
  • Ry Cooder
  • BB King
  • Robert Johnson
  • John Petrucci
  • Jeff Loomis
  • Edge
  • Slash
and last but no means least is:
  • All the guitar teachers I've had throughout the years ... and there's been a few .
No list on the planet could/would ever include all those people so any other list is meaningless to me. Sure [insert name here] could certainly play guitar but did they reach me in a meaningful sense - the answer is no.

For instance, this is the magazine that proclaimed Kaki King as a "Guitar God" - well, good for her - without meaning to be rude to her or her fans, the recording(s) I have of her are absolutely zero and I've heard her play - did she even rate a mention .

And don't even get me started on Kurt Cobain .

Yes...to almost everything said above. It really is personal as to who one thinks is the greatest, let alone 100 greatest, but I have to chime in to something I always think of when I see names like Vai, Satriani and Johnson: I was fortunate enough to see the first G3 tour at Vet's Memorial in Columbus, Ohio, and as everyone's excitement was rising for the show to start, this little (ignorantly observed) "old dude" came walking out to center stage with a chair, then backstage, back to center with a lamp, then backstage and back to center with this "weird" looking guitar...then continued to absolutely blow the minds of everyone in the room (personal opine there). I was completely blown away by everything this guy was doing. Then Mr. Adrian Legg introduced himself to us. WOW!!!

In seeing a list in Rolling Stone, one would have to consider it a "rock" guitarist list and not expect people like Adrian Legg or Segovia to be on it, but I would love to see a list of these types in order to have more tremendous players brought to my attention. Of course, this was years ago and I was really in "rock" guitar mode and have since sought out many, many "unknowns" to great reward. Anyone not familiar with Adrian Legg: reward yourself and Google him. BTW...you're welcome.

Oh come on, Mr Legg is not playing fair!!! You are absolutely not allowed to touch the tuning keys whilst you are playing .

i had a similar experience when i first saw Guthrie Govan. was at namm in 05 and went to a small show in the back of a music store to see bumblefoot (ron thal) i had no idea who the other musicians were but discovering what i think is one of the greatest guitarists alive was quite a big deal to me. here is a snippet from the show i was at. he is an obvious fusion player, but can shred and chicken pick with the best of em!
