In the hardware setup, make sure your optical input is set to "ADAT" rather than S/PDIF. Channels 9 - 16 in your input setup window should show up as ADAT inputs at that point.

What have people found as good quality optical cables for runs of 15-20 feet? I was using the cheap Hosa cables 20ft, and had the clicking problem - would love to get my Alesis AI-3 back in action with good cables.

Was latency an issue for those running ADAT interfaces, not noticable, or something that had to be shifted forward a few clicks?

001/pt 5/6/0sx/G4 800/PreSonus Digimax LT

OK, I just posted my own DigiMax/ADAT trouble thread, but I think I'll just add my 2 cents here and abandon that one. I'm having the same trouble as the other DigiMax poster (the original poster, I think). It would make sense that the Digimax needs and ADAT IN to receive clock, but I don't recall seeing and "in" port on it (I'll check when I get home, though). But it offers you the option to clock to an external clock, so it must be able to receive that, right?

But here's the bigger question: why does and ADAT preamp unit need a clock AT ALL? I thought clocks were for syncing tempos, i.e., between PT and a sequencer/drum machine/etc. Can someone shed some light on this issue?

OK, Digimax users, problem solved. In order to slave the Digimax to PT, you must use a BNC cable to connect the 001/002 to the Digimax BNC input (not sure if you need to change any setting in PT...I just figured it out, so I'll try it tonight). Viola. Either that or slave PT to the Digimax.

The clock is essential to synchronize the sample rate (either 44.1 or 44.8 kHz) of the A/D converters. If you had a separate timing for the ProTools hardware and the ADAT unit, there would be no way to accurately decode the digitized audio. Even if you begin with digital audio, you still at some point must have a clock generating a signal to determine the sample times for the digital words from a source.
Not the best (or most accurate) explanation, but without going into how dual-slope A/D converters work, it'll do.

I was excited to read this post.I bought the PreSonus Digimax LT three months ago and had been having the same set of problems.I'm running 001 with 5.3.1 software and the optical thingy doesn't seem to work.I use an optical cable out from Digimax LT and into the Digi 001, set it to optical.I have a 44.1 session- armed a track, set the Digimax clock to 44.1 and got a message that ProTools is not receiving a clock. The same exact configuration and wires has been tried with an Adat HD and all seems perfect. What is a BNC cable and where is the BNC input on the Digimax.Glad if you could help. Thanks again.
