Default *HARD DRIVE QUESTIONS!*

Wassup people.. recently i purchased a 160gb hard drive to use as a secondary hard drive dedicated to recording and storing pro tools data.. Now the questions are .. is it legit to run pro tools from the primary drive and record into the slave drive.. or is legit to run pro tools and record altogether within the slave drive..?

Both are legit, but the best thing to do is to install protools itself on the same drive as your windows, and then all the sessions on the other drive. That way the load gets spread quite evenly

Sorry... but it always gets my hackles up when someone says "slave" drive because that implies you are using two drives on the same cable in a master/slave config.

I really don't think you should do that, because that puts both drives on the same controller and doesn't accomplish the whole point of having separate drives for system and data.

The drives should be drive 1 and drive 2, both connected to the computer by separate cables (whether internally or firewire).

I just installed a new 120 GB drive and it recommended not a Master / Slave dip-switch setting but rather a Cable Selected setting. Does this make sense..

You are much better off connecting the 2nd drive to your other ide channel on its own cable. cable select just attempts to make it so you don't have to mess with jumpers, but still won't solve the problem of the drives having to share bandwidth if they're connected to the same wire.

speaking of master and slave arn't harddrive companies not allowed to use the terms master and
slave on there drives anymore?

So I set up both my internal hard drives as "cable select" instead of moving the dip suitches to Master and Slave. Although everything booted nicely, PT LE did not seem to like it when I put the Program files on the Master ("System Drive") and the Audio files on the "Second Drive". I would get an immediate 90xx Error when I tried to run a session.

So, based on the comments above, I opened open the case and set the dip switches to Master (for the System Drive) and Slave for the Audio Drive. I had to keep the internal cabeling exactly the same since there was no option to hook a second drive cable to the motherboard of my Dell 4600.

Every thing boots well... now I will check PT?? stay tuned..

Maybe I am not getting it?? Do I need to add a "card" to connect the second drive??

well what i'm saying is that should i purchase an ata133 controller card(not ide correction on that)
in order to run both drives. Connect Master Drive with its own cable to ata133 card along with the Secondary drive with its own cable to ata133 card. Does that make sense? and to Jazzmadan .. your saying its better to run 2 hard drives all on one cable as master and slave..?

I have to question this though I am not a computer genius. I understand the logic but, what happens when you add CD-RW and DVD-RW drives as I have. If I put a CD-RW drive on the same cable and it is only capable of DMA 2, will it drag the attached hard drive to DMA 2 as well? AT present, I have 2 hard drives on IDE channel 1(operating at DMA 5) and my CD and DVD burners on IDE channel 2 (operating at DMA 2). Just looking for more education on this.
