PT on a MAC for 25 years, thinking of Jumping to PC

Since you posted in in the post production forum I respond from this specific POV.

There are few plugins I can't live without having only Mac support: Spanner, Conformalizer, ffWorks and of course SoundMiner Pro 4.5 on which I rely everyday and night.
So try to think what your workflow is contained from and what tools are supporting Windows.

What do you mean? The HP Z series is above and beyond what Mac Pros were 6 years ago, well beyond in terms of technology, parts, speed, etc... And there have always been the older Z800, Z820, Z840, which competed along side the Mac Pro and were also (depending on how you configured them) more technically advanced and less expensive than a Mac Pro of a similar build.

In the end, parts are parts. There is no magic in a Mac Pro or HP Z. They are literally using the same parts (depending on config), and use parts from the same companies. Though you usually have more options when configuring a HP Z than a Mac Pro. However, that doesn't matter because you can buy all the aftermarket parts you want (always much less expensive than having the factory install them for you) and jam them in the case, provided the computer has space for them.

As far as Windows 10 vs OSX, doesn't really matter. Just use whatever you like. They both work fine.

I vote "both". If you need mac only apps etc (Conformalizer is a mission-critical thing for a lot of sound cutters, and so on) keep a Mac for that--there a lots and lots of them around used, maybe more recent than what you have now. PCs have always been better bang for buck, but many folks find Windows clunky, or have issues changing their working methods to accommodate Windows. I've had both all the time in the studio since the "Dawn of DAW" and like the flexibility that has given me. I know some high-end users who prefer mac for their work have gone to Hackintoshes, so there is that route avail too..... I have a sneaky feeling that Apple might kind of be done with "tower" style computers, that the future of their high-end computer is embodied in the current "pro" iMacs, ie they might not want to make any form of computer that does not have a screen in it any more.

No one has mentioned that Apple have a new Mac Pro in the works apparently due for release next year. I thought that was common knowledge?

Its supposed to address the concerns of pro users with regards to expandability etc.


I have a 12 core trashcan which is a fantastic machine, but I'm waiting to see what they come up with next.
Personally, I've tried in the past and I could never use Windows as my core machine.


Also there's the fact that all major mix stages run on either cheesegraters or trashcans (in the UK anyhow). So for compatibility its got to be Mac, if you're working on films or hi end TV.


If you're not in a big rush I would hold off making a decision for a bit.

Apple is "supposed to be ...." I have learned not to count on Apple for anything work-related anymore. I work @ Apple fairly often, and their inhouse editors etc etc are all on those big iMacs now and are not waiting for new tower type machines. I for one hope Apple DOES finally modernize the cheesegrater style tower (and flushes the trashcan config forever) but that seems counter to their general marketing thrust any more.



I don't see how a stage using Macs affects importing sound editor PT sessions from whatever computer, Mac Win or Hackintosh.

There's no "supposed to be". They announced that there will be a fully modular MacPro coming in 2019 loud and clear. There's no doubt in that it will happen. My doubt lies in how, as in Apple's definition of modularity.
I don't think they will offer expandability with off the shelf components. They will find a way to offer proprietary options. As they already did with their flash storage for example. I think it was in one or two lines of the Macbook Pro where flash storage hasn't yet been soldered to the board, but they didn't use the standard M.2 cards, either. You couldn't buy the cards they used in those machines anywhere.
But of course that's only speculation. Nothing is known and maybe they will surprise us all. But it's save to say that it is going to be an upgradable Apple computer.

I thought that was in the future and not in the pipeline for release.

I believed the date for the Modular Mac Pro was in deed 2019 as well.

I heard later that the Apple CPU was in a future release date, which wasn’t defined as far as I remembered


But yes that is going to be a can of worms - and I wouldn’t imagine Apple would do anything to help make Avid’s experience easier
