IR's of stages?

Hi folks,

Often when mixing for cinema, a big issue is translation between mixing/editing in a small room and getting it to a big stage for the final mix.
Translation is key.

So - Has anyone ever tried taking a sine sweep IR of a stage and using it with TL space/altiverb to provide the EQ/verb characteristics at the mix position of a large stage in a smaller room with 5.1?

Im thinking stages will protect their investment/IP/tone and not be generally open to this sort of thing politically...but thought Id throw the idea out there.

I was talking to a acoustical consultant a few months ago about the same concept, but although it seems like a perfect idea, it doesn't really work too well.

The main issue is that the acoustics of a stage can't be properly translated with only 6 speakers without actually making the room larger. Given an infinite number of speakers, channels, and processing power it works (not to mention every surface would need to be anechoic), but in reality... not so much.
Plus that you'd need to run live IRs on 6 or more channels, which would just eat processing power.

So in general, you're much more likely to get a decent mix by optimizing the room you're in, rather than make it try to imitate a larger room.
