Using real tape is something I want to forget for good. Sounds good though, cannot complain about that. There is something "more real" when your playback differs a little every single freaking time you hit play.

In a perfect world we would have had 32 track tapes which would probably have been good enough for mid-sized studios too. So instead of 24 or 48 tracks everywhere we would have got used to 32 tracks everywhere and 64 tracks in big studios.

Oh well, the nostalgy. Anyone old enough to ever have seen or heard 32kHz sampling rate? Had there not been CD we might have had 48k standard and 64k high-def sampling rates instead of the mess we now have.

---

But back to the point; yes, if you want more than 32 physical i/o with PT you need to have HDN or HDX (64 per card, only one HDN possible) and any other way physical i/o is capped at 32. In comparison, you needed a minimum of MIX2 system with four 888's to get 32 i/o back in 2000 -- cables and adapters required to connect the interfaces to cards alone cost +500

I have three Apollo Interfaces, Two Apollo 8, one X and one Duo, and the last but not list, Apollo Twin. On Cubase I see all In and Out capabilities. So with That, I don't see ASIO Limitations....

My old place had a Neve 8232 fitted 32, MCI JH-24 and Studer A820 1/4" & 1/2" two track. I never needed more than 20 in, but I flat needed more tracks. Used to bounce a 2-mix to the Studer then back to a clean 2" for BGVs or whatever, bounce back to 2-track and hand sync to the original 24 track master. I sure do love Pro Tools Ultimate.

sticking to the "good old tape times" anology that would mean that while some studio had the magic 32 track pro-tape recorder that would cost 400$ maintance a year...
... a home studio could have the cheapo cassette multitracker for 60$ with more than 256 tracks.
weird.

Not so weird to me.

Fine dining costs 150 a plate and you get 500 calories. McDonalds sells you a meal of 2500 calories for 1.50 but which one would you prefer?

Agreed with one exception, fine dining with PT’s MIDI: I reach with my knife for a bite of the main entree, when it suddenly disappears, then reappears on another table in the restaurant.
