Default "Online" Mode?

This happens to me ALL the time, and I cannot figure out why. I go to record or turn the click ON, and I get a message telling me that I can't go into "countoff mode when online". It also does not let me record while this button is lit up.

I have no idea what I'm doing to accidentally turn this on. I also have no idea what it's for.

I have to click this button to turn it off before I can either record or turn the click on.

Any idea what this is and what I am doing to constantly turn it on by accident? Thanks!

Turn it off if you are not syncing to external clock

The shortcut is Control+J or Alt+Spacebar to turn on/off online mode. My guess is you are using Control+Spacebar for record but accidentally hitting Alt+Spacebar (much harder to accidentally hit Control+J)

Online mode is for syncing to other systems via MTC or MMC or LTC/VITC (if you have a Sync HD.) It puts Pro Tools in a wait state for incoming timecode or commands for the transport. We use it to sync Pro Tools to other DAWs (like Logic or Cubase.) On a system with a Sync HD, it uses that to lock to other systems.

It used to be also the way to sync two Pro Tools system before Satellite became a thing so now it is mainly used to lock Pro Tools to other DAWs (since they can't do Satellite)

It has nothing to do with with external clock unless the clock in reference is positional timecode. External clock usually refers to word clock/sample clock/house clock.

Hmm - I do use CTRL+Spacebar to record sometimes - but I can't imagine I accidentally hit ALT+Spacebar that often. This happens a LOT to me.

That being said, I have no other explanation either. At least I know I can shut this function off with ALT+Space.

Thank you!

I get this a lot since I use Ctrl+K to turn on/off the pre-roll, and sometimes I'll accidentally hit J.
