Default OT – Sharing DSL between a networked PC and a Mac

I know this is way off topic; but many of you guys seem to run both a Mac and a PC.

I have a internal DSL modem in one of the PCI slots of my PC (an Intel 3200 DSL modem for Qwest DSL).

My Mac and PC are networked through a separate NIC (3Com) on my PC, a 10/100 hub and the NIC on my Mac. This is accomplished using PCMacLAN 7.2.

Is there any software you guys know of that will also let me share my DSL connection through this second 3Com NIC with my Mac?

Just thought Id ask.

Damon

There's a NAT shareware application. I forgotten the url. It'll come...

Anyway, I know some people who downloaded this for their W2k server. Works fine.

It'll assign IP address to each host on your private LAN, as they access the internet.

It works behind the scene, so there's not much hassle.

Shaggy. that's sounds like what I need. My mac and PC are networked just fine; I just need to share my DSL connection between my PC's internal modem, through my NIC -> Mac.

It used to be www.NAT32.com/

Maybe do a search for NAT32?

Best use is with two nic cards like you have. Most secure.

Back-up your sys.ini file first.

NAT setup window.
Dial up networking (none)
Two LAN interfaces
Set gateway to 0.0.0.0
Filter to 0.0.0.0
name server IP: provided by DSL service
DHCP? or do you static IP?

Whatever your internal network Subnet Mask is.

255.255.0.0 is a good one.

Good private networks numbers are 10.10.x.x or 172.172.x.x

Depending on the OS your PC is running you can use "Internet Connection Sharing" (98se or newer) and the PC will act like a NAT, DHCP, Router. Keep in mind that a Microsoft box will be all thats between you and the internet!? Proceed with caution, or get some type of firewall software for the PC. (Tiny Firewall, etc.)
The easiest thing to do is to get one of the aforementioned Linksys Router/Firewalls. For a 100 bucks (or less) it's a much safer bet.

Im running 98 SE. Where is the Internet Sharing set-up done for 98? I thought that was ME, 2K only feature.

Im running a firewall on the PC.

As far as I understand it; the router isn’t a solution available to me; my DSL is on an INTERNAL modem on a PCI slot in my PC; there is not an Ethernet output from the DSL modem that I could hook into a router. It’s just straight phone line into the modem, no other connections.

So, I need software sharing to pass that internal DSL connection, out through another NIC, into the hub (in my case) where I already have my mac and PC networked.

Ill look into NAT32 and also the built in OS solution.

Thanks!

Hey Valvebrother!
Sorry I didnt read more carefully. But heres the MS kbase article on setting up ICS. For more info there's always www.microsoft.com/technet Search for "Q234863". Thats the article this was pasted from. There may be issues with your firewall so I'd remove it then re-add it after ICS is setup (if you go that way). Some firewall software will block traffic on both cards so the MAC will be blocked . Not sure what you run but it may be able to "trust" the MAC side (the 3com nic) so its not blocked.

the kbase article --------------

You can enable Internet Connection Sharing by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Me:
Click Start , point to Settings , click Control Panel , and then double-click Add/Remove Programs .

On the Windows Setup tab, double-click Internet Tools .

Click to select the Internet Connection Sharing check box, and then click OK .

Click OK , and then follow the instructions on the screen to run the Internet Connection Sharing wizard.

For additional information about ICS, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
