Anybody posted test results for a 1333 FSB yet? I can get a e6750 cpu and mobo for about $50-60 cheaper than a quad Q6600 and the quad is only running a 1066 FSB. You think saving $50 and a faster FSB is silly compared to the quad? I imagine 1066 to 1333 is not much difference but a dual core to a quad might be a huge difference. I plan to order parts this weekend. I am hoping I can get away with onyl buying the cpu and mobo and using all old parts that I have around. Case, power, drives....

You really want to go Quad Core For PT. The ASUS P965 boards and the P35 boards will all support FSB1333. You really want to spend the extra money on a Quad. Your performance with PT will actually double.

The difference between FSB 1066 and FSB 1333 is around 5-10%. the difference between 2 and four cores is around 100%

In this case the FSB is relatively unimportant. Check out the Dverb benchmarks at the top of this thread. My advice is build a plain old ASUS P5K with a Q6600 and run 1066 or faster memory.

If your on a budget you would actually do MUCH better by running DDR2 800 and a Q6600. You would still see a 80% improvement over dual core and might actually put some money back in your pocket. Plus you could pickup some higher clocked memory a couple of months down the road when the price drops some more.

Go Quad-the results speak for themselves.

Well, the Quad is up and running as of last week. After a week, it's been solid and stable through several recording and mixing sessions, including some sessions lately where I've been recording some of my old vinyl albums into ProTools at 24-bit/96kHz (not because I think it sounds better like that, but just because I can, really) through my Rosetta 200 so I have digital copies of them.

DVerb 2 test results - 279 Dverbs at 24/48/1024. I'm pleased with that. 32 mono audio tracks full of dverbs, 32 mono aux inputs with three dverbs on each plus a fourth dverb on 23 of them. Successfully plays back a test tone from track one from five minutes, and successfully records for five minutes on all 32 tracks. It feels loaded down at that point, of course, but the CPU meter doesn't peak.

My "old" Athlon 64 X2 4600+ system was good for 90, so I feel like this is a solid upgrade.

Setup:

Digi002 Rack Factory
ProTools 7.3.1cs4 w/ MPT

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
Asus P5K Deluxe P35 motherboard w/ WiFi
2GB (1GB x 2 sticks) OCZ Gold DDR2-800
Asus EN8500GT Silent 256MB video card
(1) 80GB Seagate 7200.10 8MB SATA2 hard drive (system)
(1) 320GB Seagate 7200.10 16MB SATA2 hard drive (audio)
(1) 500GB Seagate eSATA external drive (for backups - turned off while using the system)
Asus DVD-RW SATA drive (I don't recall the model number offhand)

I feel a 300% increase in DSP is pretty solid too

Its also pretty hard to complain about the "Bang for the Buck factor"

Since I spent less than $800 building this machine (I already had the OS, RAM, and the two large hard drives) then yeah, I'd say the bang-for-the-buck factor is just about off the charts.

Your comment seems to cut to the chase: budget vs real-world PT power. Can you explain further FSB specs, DDR2/DDR3 specs, and relative costs? I'm looking for the best bang-for-the-buck in a STABLE quad motherboard/processor/memory setup. (Of course, in 60 days it'll all change!!!) Thanx.

Mykhal has a good point, all of the specs on the top of the page are current with the exception of you can use the P5K, P5K Deuluxe and the P5K Deluxe WiFi instead of the P965 based boards listed.

The only thing that has changed is the chipset from P965 to P35.

Please keep in mind the P35 chipsets and the Q6600 Quads have not been offcially qualified by Digi yet.

Having said that they are running PT flawlessly and I don't think there is a Intel Quad builder out there that would not enthusistically recommend that you build one.

They are FAST and stable.

I'm hoping to get the Specs page updated tomorrow to reflect the newer board choices.

Its really hard to beat the performance price wise especially if you have a PCIe video card, hard drives and memory that you can migrate.

Ryan K built his for less than 600.00 by reusing his old memory, video card and hard drives. He's got twice the power of the old AMD quadizillas and nobody was complaining about them. It's not a under 500.00 system (YET) but it can be had for not a whole lot more. Or you can build from scratch and bring one in well under a grand. Keep in mind that the difference btween a Core 2 Duo and a Core 2 Quad is around 80.00-this has got to be the cheapest Protools power increase ever! The other nice thing is that these machines will not be obsolete next year

DDR3 VS DDR2..... well DDR3 will obviously be faster, it is at the moment considerbly more expensive though. All of the Asus boards on the list will run DDR2 1066 and right now that memory is riding in the "Sweet Spot" pricewise. You can spend as much as you want to spend but frankly you will probably hit the limits of PTLE more often than you will run out of Quad power. When the price drops on DDR3 in 6 months or so than it will be good time to switch. The speed increase from FSB 1066 to 1333 is measurable but not enough to get excited about. Plus the all of the ASUS boards listed will run at FSB1333 if you drop a FSB1333 processer in them, this includes the older P965 boards. So there is a upgrade path when Penryn ships.

You can also overclock the bejesus out of these things but as far as I'm concerned if you not actually using the added power your just putting a lot of stress on your memory and voltage regulator circuitry.

Real short version grab a P5K series ASUS board with onboard Fire Wire, getcha some good low latency DDR2 1066 and go make some music. Your DAW will become a appliance instead of something that requires a lot of attention.

Awesome. (By the way, some of the posted prices have changed.) I'd like to step-up to a Quad as economically as possible. If I use my current video card (ATI Radeon 9550), SIIG (Digi-approved) firewire card, case, power supply, SATA drives, and DVD+DL burner - it seems I only need:

1) Asus P5B ($110 at newegg)
2) Intel Q6600 ($280 at newegg)
3) Corsair 2x1GB DDR2-800 memory ($64 after newegg rebate)

for a total of $454. Seem okay? I bet a lot of us would be interseted in this. Thanx!!!
