Default What exactly is a limiter, and what is it used for?

Like should it be used on drum, vocal, guitar, etc...

This is the Digidesign Users Forum. Unfortunately, it's not recording 101. There is tons of literature out there on basic recording. Maybe give old Google a spin.

+1 ^^^^^

Word! I think this forum is getting closer and closer to an allround beginners chat and I hope it gets back to what it is set up for, namely a User Forum for Avid and Digidesign and hopefully it is meant to be a bit more geared towards professional recording and gear so here is to •hope•

So what would be the threshold? 100 newbie posts on a newbie forum, yea?

From wikipedia :
Quote:
A limiter is a circuit that allows signals below a specified input power to pass unaffected while attenuating the peaks of stronger signals that exceed this input power.
It can be used on any signal you want to limit.

I want to limit all the vocals out of this sentence; therefore, you said:

t cn b sd n n sgnl y wnt t lmt

Makes sense? How about limiting all posts from users less than 100 posts? Or anyone not being able to write perfect english?

I'm making a joke here if someone is wondering...

I don't get how I'm being a troll. I was simply asking a question because I just purchased Pro Tools and saw the Dyn/Expander limiter plug in and wondered what it did. We all have to start somewhere.

Thank you to those that helped though I really appreciate it.
