Default Monitoring 3rd party software w/ Digi hardware???

OK... I'll try to communicate the question the best I can and I hope I'm clear enough to get a response ;-)

My studio is currently Nuendo based. However, I prefer PT because of my background with PT (the studio was equipped with Nuendo when I became partners). We plan on installing a HD system soon w/ either a ProControl or a large format analog desk (i.e SSL 4000 series) as our primary system. However, we'll keep our Nuendo system as well as augment with Logic and DP to be able to accomidate outside projects that may have been created with those systems.

I know that with PT, you can record on any input and monitor on any output (i.e. monitor the input track via your stereo pair and send aux sends to the tallent). However... in our current Nuendo set up, you can't do this.

This may be a limitation of the RME card or Nuendo. I'm not sure. But, in our configuration, if you want to monitor latency free, you turn on "direct monitoring" which means if you are going in input # 3, you MUST monitor on output #3.

Here's my question... if I am using Nuendo via the ASIO drivers on HD hardware, will I have this same limitation or will the fact that I'm using HD hardware allow me to monitor in Nuendo the same way I do in PT?

How about Logic and DP?

I ask this because it makes a BIG difference in if I get a ProControl or an analog desk. Right now, we monitor through a small digital console (d8b) so we can use the 1:1 I/O scheme w/ Direct Monitoring and have sends for headphone mixes. If I ditch the console, then I no longer will be able to use Direct Monitoring in Nuendo, so I need to make sure I can monitor correctly.

Did that make sense? If not, let me know so I can try to clarify.

Thanks,
Thomas
