He is referring to midi recording. Basically manually placing the beat on the quantization without recording live.

I don't think you can do that in PT. Unless anyone else around here knows of a way, the only option might be to do it in another program, then import the midi file into PT.

Hmm...unless I have no idea what the initial question is about, in reference to the midi recording and placing beats on the grid, of course you can do that in PT. I'd rather not go any further until Ericmusicman can give us more details about his problem.

step recording is when you record midi to a grid, and when you hit a note, the cursor goes to the next grid step and waits for you to hit another note. when you hit that note, it will go to the next grid position and wait until you hit the next note. it always waits for you to hit the next note. i never saw the utility in using step recording. i think its a hold over from the way old sequence-on-your-drum-machine days.

its not available in PT.

Step recording is the most effective way to record notes and/or patterns that are difficult to play in real time. I've used it for years with PT but check this video out in order to get you started. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENqSbCh9rYA

It is still possible in Pro Tools. It is called "Step Input", which can be done form the menu "Event" --> "Event Operations" --> "Step Input..."
