Pro Tools Delayed Playback w/ Video and Out of Sync

Hi,

I'm experiencing a 1-3 second delay when I hit play and have my video file online. The video file is a 2.9gb, 85 minutes long mp4 (H264). The video is being displayed on a Dell S2340M monitor. I'm also noticing a drift of sorts. Sometimes I begin playback and the sync is well off... but if I keep playing for several minutes things seem to look back in sync. However, it's difficult to add sound effects reliably this way as nudging to my location is proving not accurate sometimes.

I've read talks about going with DNxHD36 or ProRes 422 Proxy but the feedback on those solutions seems to vary. Have there been any reliable solutions for this type of issue?

My setup is Pro Tools 11.3.0 on a Mac OS 10.13.2, 2.2 GHz Intel Corei7 with 16GB and Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB.

Though the files are very much larger, go with DNxHD36 or ProRes. PT does not work very well with h264, and as you have found, FX spotting is very difficult. It's the nature of the beast I'm afraid. h264 is really a delivery format never intended for post work. I now use DNxHD36 for working in PT, then the finished soundtrack is imported into the NLE and the final render done in h264.
