Default How do YOU record guitar?

How to mic a guitar amp is a very debateable subject. I'm in the market for some new mics, and would like to hear everyone's suggestions. I'll probably use a 57 with another mic on the cab, and maybee a NT1A way back to catch some of the room tone... I'm going for a deep hard tone that's not too crunchy and a good clean sound as well. Ribbon mics? Yea/No?

Well, with all the processing available, I like to record my guitars direct, that way I can always change the sound and am not stuck with a distorted sound. or what not.

My vote is direct, you can morph the sound as much as you need.

if you've got a ribbon mic, definitely try it out. i've been starting to use a Royer ribbon mic a few feet back from the cab, and it gives it a nice feel.

Ribbon mics rule!

I however do not have one YET! but will soon enough... what I have been doing is this:

Guitar cab - either clients 4 x 12 or my boogie 2 x 12...

E 609 thru the Vintech 1272 - 2 to 4 inches from cone for all.... adjust for sound ya know??
E 609 Thru the Trident S 20
SM 57 thru the Trident S 20

Gotta disagree with the direct, however.... I sometimes run the guy into a direct bx so I at least have the signal. If it is a solo guitarist for the band only, then why not. More to work with.

Set levels to the desired sound and check for phase. I have been getting some FAT sounds from that setup.

I recently had good results with a AKG D112. It was 2 inches away from the grille and slightly off-center of one of the speakers. Had to tip the cab backwards about 30 degrees. Also, I used an AKG C414 a few feet back.

I also will use the Sansamp PSA plug-in on an already distorted track if it needs more tweaking.

i usually run a DI...it can't hurt, and plus, if for some reason after you record the guitar you dont like the amp sound, you can ReAMP it.
