Though the video shows Win7, the folders reside in relativity, the same place on XP;

Go to Control Panel>Folders>View Tab and select radio button for 'Show Hidden Files'

You should now be able to see AppData folder C:/Users/the login name where PT is installed to/AppData/Roaming/Digidesign

No Roaming on Win XP.

Delete Digidesign Databases and Preferences

To delete Digidesign Database folders for all hard drives in Windows XP:
  • Go to your Start menu and click on Computer.
  • Double-click on the C: drive.
  • Right-click on the Digidesign Databases folder and delete it. Do the same for any additional hard drives or volumes. (As of Pro Tools 8.0.3, this step is no longer required. This step is still required for all versions of Pro Tools prior to version 8.0.3)
  • Go back to your C: drive.
  • Double-click on Program Files.
  • Go to the Digidesign folder.
  • Go to the Pro Tools folder.
  • Right-click on the Databases folder and delete it.
  • NOTE: If you are using Pro Tools HD, DV Toolkit 2 or Complete Production Toolkit, you will want to backup your Catalogs folder before deleting the Databases folder.

To delete Pro Tools preference files in Windows XP:
  • Go to your Start menu and click on Computer.
  • Double-click on the C: drive or whichever drive you installed Pro Tools to.
  • Double-click on Program Files.
  • Go to the Common Files folder.
  • Go to the Digidesign folder.
  • Go to the DAE folder.
  • Right-click on the DAE Prefs folder and delete it.
  • Go back to your C: drive.
  • Double-click on 'Documents and Settings'.
  • Double-click on your user name.
  • Go to the 'Application Data' folder.
  • If the 'Application Data' is not showing, click on the Tools menu and choose 'Folder Options'.
  • Click on the View tab.
  • Select 'Show Hidden Files and Folders'.
  • Click Apply and OK. 'Application Data' should now be viewable.
  • Right-click on the Digidesign folder and delete it.

Well, finally figured out the trashing (thnx ZH and DUC)
but NOW all I'm getting when I try to launch PT is
"the application failed to initialize properly 0xc0000005"
which I've been trying to remove, did the "data execution prevention" opt out with
selecting PT to not be affected, still nothing but the message

Try setting Windows DEP back and dismiss that optimization.

Thanx both filo and zed...I did try setting the DEP back and still nothing...now wondering if I should try to uninstall then reinstall PT...would that help? Would all my sessions still be kept? They are all saved on my internal music drive (the E drive) but no back ups...
I know I'm an idiot for A. not using an external drive, and B. not backing up copies.
In fact I think the main drive is just partitioned though both sides are pretty huge...weirdest thing is everything was fine up til the other day, the only other issue was if I had sessions with tons of plug ins and/or virtual instruments in Expand...those session would sometime get stuck in a glitch sound or crash towards the end of a bounce to disk...almost wondering if one of those was the cause, I had just had one of them open a few days before the crash...ok...awaiting any more info. and if the reinstall might help and if my sessions are safe...thanks y'all!

Do a search for Trasher - it's a third party utility to Trash Preferences and Databases and works very, very well. Just use the correct one for your OS.

No matter how you Trash Preferences and Databases, you should empty the Recycle Bin and then reboot your computer before relaunching Pro Tools.

At this point in time having a backup plan, like Acronis True Image Home, and being able to go back to a known working system should be starting to look appealing.

Given the issues you're having a complete uninstall and reinstall of Pro Tools may be in order.

You mentioned the "main drive is just partitioned..." Pro Tools requires a separate physical hard drive to record your sessions to, not a partition of the System Drive. AAMOF, recording to a partition of the System Drive is usually worse than recording to the System Drive, although neither are recommended or supported.

Cheers,
