Default 002 + external mixer?

As I'm saving for a Digi002, I look around my studio in an attempt to re-organize, re-assess, possibly streamline the whole setup. I'm wondering if keeping an external mixer will be handy or obsolete with a Digi002? I know, most of you will probably suggest to keep it, as a mixer can come in handy for many purposes.

Thing is, I only use it for monitoring right now, and seeing that the 002 doubles up as a stand-alone digital mixer sans Pro Tools, would I regret getting rid of my Behringer?

Oh my god,

my Behringer mixer just crapped out on me, completely. Won't power up, no lights, nothing.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrghhhhhh....

I was thinking the same thing and do away with the external mixer however after using the Digi 002 in Protools mode I have extreme latency from what I'm playing to what's coming back out the speakers...It's impossible to play to a click track...So I'm still using the external mixer until I figure out how to get the latency reduced in Digi 002....

Moon, have you tried low latency monitoring while tracking? You'd get very low latency that way.

BTW, what are your system specs?

PK, I still find a seperate mixer is handy to have... IMO, the best bet is a digital mixer with lightpipe out (lightpipe won't work on the Digi 002 at 88.2/96 KHz though), but any mixer can be a plus with any PT system... the Digi 002 is really no different in this regard than the Digi 001.

Have you tried changing the Hardware Buffer size in Pro Tools? You'll get around 7 ms of i/o latency with the lowest buffer settings (64 samples at 44.1/48 KHz, 128 samples at 88.2/96 KHz).

As Phil points out, the built-in LLM (low-latency monitoring) mode of the 002 will also enable you to track with very low latency (but "dry", no effects on the record-enabled tracks).

However, on a well-configured, fast CPU, you should be able to multi-track via Pro Tools (by setting the HW buffer setting low).

Hello Phil and Kenn,
Thanks for your replies...Phil, it's last years model Sony VAIO,1.2GHZ,512MB Desktop running WinXP...I just finished doing a full reinstall of the factory CDs and then wiped out everything but the basics it needs to keep running...Just finished installing Protools and the demo to make sure it's working right which it is for playback anyway...Kenn, I know how to do the procedure your talking about from using the Digi 001 but have not tried it yet...I'll try to reduce that first thing tomorrow and see what happens...Phil, I'm not sure what your talking about...I took a quick glimpse through the manual to see if there is a button or something to push for the low latency but I didn't find anything...Please explain or which page in the manual describes what your talking about?...Thank you both...Ted
