Default midi recommendations?

What are a good controller and module for sounds considering I want to spend $1k for both. Is the Roland stuff with expansion cards the way to go?

For alot of great sounds and a nice controller for that money, check out-

Roland XP30- great sounds and lots of them with space for up to 2 expansion boards.
Korg N5EX- no expansion but nice 'Korg' sounds.
Yamaha S30- this would be my pick of the bunch with 1 PLG expansion to add VA, VL, DX, VH synthesis etc.

or you could get a controller keyboard like Roland A30 and a 2nd hand JV1080, Korg N1R, Ensong MR Rack etc etc.

There are alot of great options out these days- nothing sounds bad anymore- it's up to your personal preference what you want.

Good Luck.

PS- for the ultimate in nice sounds for a bit more money- Korg Triton and Roland XV module- both sound different but complement each other really nicely. Also use the Triton as a super Fx processor, vocoder and sampler.

This is just the predicament I was up against. I decided to go for the Roland A-33 controller ($470) and Bitheadz' Unity DS-1 sampler software for Mac ($299). The Unity stuff is extremely flexible, supports Altivec in the G4's and will support dual-processor Macs in the next rev - due next month - which will double it's capacity.
