Default Lovely Jungley Bassage...

Does anyone know how to produce those quality Drum & Bass basslines using samples? Any advice on effect types/combinations/units/plugins/techniques would be cool.

Well I probably wouldn't do it in PT....I use Reason for the sampling and synthing side....Did you mean in PT or in general?

I think a key to Drum and Bass is a seriously deep tone....maybe fool with different waveforms, samples, EQing and such....other than that, just tinkering around is my method. Listen to the tracks you like and try to hear what's done there, then tinker, would be my advice. I also like to try to make an exact copy of a favorite beat or song in Reason to rally understand whats happening in the original.....

Thats a pretty weird and not very decisive answer, apologies

Good luck, have fun

I have a copy of Reason as well. I've tried using that Scream distortion along with phasers and such on bass samples but can't make anything that really rocks.

Dunno...what've you got for refills? That could holdya back a bit...you gotta have a good groundwork to tweak from. Check out the props site and find the sonic triple bass refill if you like...not to pricey, downloadbale, and got some good solid samples (Not really techno-y or elektronica, but seriously well recored waveforms of standups, fretless, and more).

I dunno if I'd use a Scream for a Drum and Bass deal...as I said IMHO the key to the genre is deep bass sounds, and the distortion you get there isn't gonna deepen the tone at all...unles you seriously fool with the Cut filter there and pump the lows...might be effective, havn't tried.

EQing, good samples, and a good riff would be suggestions!

Maybe try some unison as well? Dont really know what else to say...tinkering with all the effects might be fun

I want something that sounds like those mad basslines on the first two Amon Tobin albums.

Not familiar with the albums, sorry to say, but my best advice is this:

Try imitating and replicating to understnad what you`re aiming for.

Tinker and fool with riffs effects and ideas till you dig it!

PS: Probably a lifetime of work, depending on how far you go with it...

Good luck!

Yeah, I read that article a while back. Well interesting. I'm don't listen to a lot of Drum & Bass but with that guy it's kind of irresistible .

i'd add to that compression. critical part of the right bass sound is compression. i'm not good enough to tell u exactly what to do, ya gotta try a few different plug-ins or h/w compressors and play with them...

and dont limit ur sources to samples, synths or a bass guitar are gonna work too.

I definitely know what you are saying about synths. I know Tobin has been using them for a while and even DJ Shadow is using them now but I really want to stick to using samples for the moment to sort of 'cut my teeth' as it were. I know that a lot of producers have created mad D&B bass sounds from samples and I want to be able to do that. It's the Hip Hop in me. It won't go away.
